Do most consultants cheat when in a relationship? And as you go higher, the cheating is more frequent and common? 🧐 Calling out all consultants, drop a yes or no if you have cheated and your gender and if in some ways your job contributed to this behaviour!! 😂

Male, never. It has nothing to do with my job. It can only be related to my character I believe.

Always faithful except when traveling

If ever there were a classic consultant exchange, this would be it.

Female—was married to a Management Consultant from another firm—now divorced. Found out he had been secretly conducting multiple relationships in the cities where his long-term projects were based. I don’t think consulting makes you cheat, I think there’s an elevated concentration of selfish, insecure, yet highly successful assholes who land in consulting so the industry gets a bad rap.

I would say 78% male consultants and 17% female consultants cheat

For traveling consultants under 30, hookups were common amongst my colleagues. Especially if we were at the client for months on end.

like

I know, right! I know it’s more common. I think the only consultants who never cheated are commenting on this thread. 😂😂

like

Female, No. I wish I had energy for my husband.

like

Haha! No.. I am thinking if I will date this guy in consulting, would it be a mistake!!

likefunny

But you can’t base the behaviors of other men, or specifically men in consulting, on this guy you’re interested in… just bc he’s in consulting doesn’t automatically make him a cheater. This logic is bizarre

like

Male, have never considered it. And pre-pandemic I was on the road 40+ weeks out of the year.

Ethical non-monogamy is the hip thing right now anyway, don’t be so 2010

like

Never cheated, but at times it’s been extraordinarily hard, especially during travel. At those moments, I knew the person I was with wasn’t my long term person or my person for much longer… but I just hadn’t worked up the courage/balls yet.
Feelings of “thinking about it” pushed me to do something though

like

If a consultant can cheat on the road, the spouse can cheat on your bed! Think of it and maintain Nash Equilibrium

like

Female, never, never would! Committed to my husband and this job doesn’t change that.

like

Married and could never cheat bc I've been through and built far too much with my wife.

Not gonna say I don't think about it though...there are soooooo many beautiful women out there. Just what the sex could be, absolutely never thought about making a move or how I could get away with it.

like

Consulting doesn’t give you the opportunity to as much as movies like to show that traveling executive cheating on his / her spouse.

Now trading, yeah you have an actual wlb and if you’re good, a shit ton of money early in life. Lot more opportunity there.

like

31 male, never cheated. Unlikely to ever will.

like

How? Check this out…

I’m unlikely to ever cheat. [grammatical—yes, even with the split infinitive since this is English instead of Latin—but for the purists…]
I’m unlikely to cheat. [grammatical]
I’m unlikely to will. [nope—even if you intended “to will” as an infinitive, it’s a transitive verb and requires an object]
Unlikely to ever will. [double nope—same as above but now there isn’t even a subject]

In short, you made a fine hash of the English language. Glad you asked? 😁

38. 9 years in this career, 3 different relationships, never cheated.

Happily married now. Her insecurities are pretty obvious given the stereotype, though, so I have to remind her she’s the one regularly.

like

I don’t cheat, I just stay out of relationships. One-four different women a week.

like

Consultants are not loyal to the companies they work for as they can always change but loyal to their significant other. That happiness weighs out heavier than cheating.. also depends on how young your friend circle is

like

I (M) don’t think so in general. But personally, I’ve hooked up with someone while having a break during a rough patch with my SO. I do think the job contributed in some ways. Work is an easy excuse to schedule dates later the evening or to move times around, and being able to expense dinner and drinks certainly helps. And the transient nature of travel weeks means there is a deadline mentality baked into the interaction e.g. “if you’re feeling this, make it happen now, because I’ll be gone in a few days”

like

To people questioning the intention behind this post - it’s just a hypothesis based on personal experiences and not an accusation. And through this post I am trying to prove or disprove the hypothesis. Why so defensive? It’s basic problem solving!

funny

I think what I don't like about your logic is that you link his cheating behavior to his profession. And that causes you to generalize everyone else in that same profession, or else you wouldn't have asked this question. The fact that this question is even being asked in the first place implies you don't give consultants the benefit of the doubt first as individuals, you just view them as consultants who have a higher likelihood to cheat, which is just not true.

If you're previous partner cheated on you, it's something he did as an individual who doesn't value commitment and loyalty, not bc he's a consultant. What you need to do is try to find ppl who value those things (may be a consultant who knows), not avoid consultants bc they might potentially cheat.
