Do you guys have any experience that your home office is in one state (Washington) and you are living in another (New York), how does taxation work? Is it possible to provide a residential address in Washington so I can pay Washington state tax instead of New York City tax??

You typically pay taxes on the state you live in. So if you live in NY you pay taxes in NY. Claiming you live in one state for tax purposes but actually living in another is fraud and they don’t play games… unless you have like millions of dollars then the rules don’t apply

like

Ahh okay… cuz my husband lives in New York and I am in Washington. We are thinking of a 50/50 split of me travelling back and forth so wonder how that would work?

NY has been particularly notorious about going after tax evaders. They have even checked cell phone records to see what state a person has spent most of their time in if the person was claiming to be a resident of another state.

In the work from anywhere life, you pay taxes on where you physically work. If your office is in Washington, but you live in NY and work from your home office in NY, you pay NY tax. But when you take a work vacation to SC, then you would pay SC tax that week

SA1- that is how both Accenture and EY do it. When we travel for work, we book the client’s location as our work location. My wife’s company figures it all out on the backend, which seems a bit off, but they also don’t travel as much as we do

My partner and I are in the process of buying a PHEV that qualifies for the full non-refundable federal tax credit. We will both owe taxes in excess of the current $7,500 cap (will see if that increases with the new budget bill). If we both own the car (i.e. both names on the title), how do we manage filing for the tax credit when filing separately? Do we just pick one of us to file? Is there guidance on splitting the credit across owners? Does it matter what order our names are on the title?

Currently 25 years old.
Goals:
* Own a home in a HCOL
* 2 kids (eventually)
* Retire at 50 on $125k/year.

Envelope math:
* $125k/year would require an investment portfolio of ~$3M.
* Targeting a $2M home (split with partner)
* 2 kids - $1M to raise both (including college fund, split with partner)
* $500K buffer for unexpected expenses
* 33% tax

Therefore, 6.5-7M retirement savings needed. To hit this (assuming 6% return after inflation), I’d need to save ~$110k/year.

Hello All,

Can anyone please help me here.
I have made my tax payment in July 2022 but yesterday (15 Nov 2022) I receive an email that tax payment is due for assessment year 2022-23

I called to help desk and he advised to raise rectification request from Tax portal and update the challan number. I tried to raise request but need to upload some XML or json file there. I am not sure how to upload or modify that file.

Does anyone know what steps need to follow as I already made my tax payment.
