I wouldn't unless you really want to go into accounting. It's a decision that should not be taken lightly. Maybe work for a year and see the kind of work that accountants have to do before deciding if it would be a good fit for you.
Speaking from my own experience, I felt pressured to pursue CPA because everyone else in my accounting program was, even though I knew I wanted to eventually pivot to finance. After 18 months of studying ungodly amounts, zero social life, and maybe 4 hours of sleep a night, I passed all four sections of the test and got my CPA. While it did open up some doors for me in the accounting world, I wish I had spent the energy and time on pursuits that more aligned with the career I wanted to go into. After 1 year at a big4 firm and 2 years as a fund accountant working at a REIT, I found that I hated doing the accounting for all these cool investments that other people were doing. I wanted to be the one doing the investing. I managed to get an offer as an analyst in commercial RE investing. To pursue this career pivot, I had to accept that the CPA for me was sunken cost (mean the investment of time and energy, not just the money I paid pursuing). I know plenty of people that stay in accounting even though they do not like their job, because the work to become a CPA is such a large undertaking that they feel the need to see it through.
Wow thanks for sharing. I graduated in finance I’m currently in a junior controller position and I’m the only one in my North America team that doesn’t have CPA and it sometimes shows in my work. But now I don’t feel so guilty for not pursuing it because maybe I need to focus more growing in finance. Also little background I was hired being told not much accounting would be needed and turned out that was a bit fabricated to get me to join lol. Because I mentioned accounting is weak point (prefer to be honest instead of screwed lol)
