... You say that like being married is a bad thing.
No! Opposite... I've heard that men wearing rings can help gain empathy (they need the job, so they can provide for their family). And women being married can be 'read' as being less focused on work/going to have children soon. I have a few non-consulting friends (gasp!) who live in DC and work in politics. Said they don't wear their rings to interview. Just curious about fishbowl perspectives.
Isn't is stupid that we even have to have a discussion like this? Being married shouldn't flag people to preconceived notions good or bad- they are supposed to be evaluating skill set.
It is also illegal to use marital status in a hiring decision or even ask about it in an interview.
I wear my wedding band. It's pretty basic. I probably wouldn't wear it to an interview if it was flashy, for the reasons you mention. Sometimes prion interviewing like that you're married as it shows commitment. Depends on the interviewer, so I would find out as much about them as I could. I wouldn't wear my engagement ring to an interview. Honestly, I only put that one on when we're doing something special (I don't travel with it either).
"How did your wife feel the last time you were sued for asking that question?"
I wear my engagement ring and wedding band normally and I definitely wear it to interviews. It sometimes serves a purpose, like when interviewer asks me why I want to work in city X, I say it's because my husband works there. I've had a hard time in the past on convincing firms that I want to stay in a particular city (non-consulting firms) because they look at my resume and see how much I've moved around and have no roots in city X. People usually stop questioning that commitment when you say your spouse is there.
Def had an Accenture partner point to my ring and ask how my husband would feel about me traveling all the time during an interview. Didn't wear it to any interviews after that.
