👋🏾 Joseph! Nice to ‘see’ you here and great question! So, the number one trait for not just leadership, but quite frankly, society at large, is curiosity. Be curious—of other people, their experiences, their lives. I find the most ‘enlightened’ people (so to speak) are those who are either well-travelled (and I don’t just mean within Europe or to coastal high immigration hubs—NY/Cali etc) Experience life being ‘the other’ somewhere. And I recognize that not everyone has the luxury of foreign travel, but this curiosity can also be sated by the pursuit of learning—a book, an article, a podcast. In this day and age, we actually have no excuse for ignorance outside of willful neglect. Second trait, that stems from the first, is empathy. How can we expect people to design programs, policies and practices for people with whom they are unfamiliar and consequently, for whom they lack empathy. I’d love to hear what others think...
1. Show up for D&I events 2. Listen to your employees, instead of following the D&I trend 3. Support employees who are actively working in the BRGs, I would like a job number please.
Also, Hey Nadia! 😁 Great job per usual!
@Nadia. Amen. And wow just now reading this after posting in the featured thread my own thoughts - it is encouraging to find parallel thinking...provides even more hope of together making progress
Fortunately we have a great diversity program. It won best D&I program in all of IPG and has addressed topics like Race & Culture and ageism. I think they key participation driver was that the topics were all a result of an agency social survey. It’s what employees wanted to discuss not what someone in HR felt was appropriate. And the agency actively participate across all offices in D&I events and oftentimes those who participate the most aren’t those you expect which is an added bonus. If you’re a POC a lot of times the interest in you helps build internal relationships because people truly want to know you...I’m sure that I don’t have to say that but this obviously leads to better work from the agency.
Hi Campbell, that sounds amazing - what program are you referring to? Would love to hear more. Thanks.
