Hi I've joined Harman in May but hasn't been assigned to any project yet. I've asked hr and reporting manager they said they're working on it and there's nothing to be worried about However I just want to know if there's anything I should be concerned about what's the bench policy? It makes business sense, because you need to raise morale even more when the office is being decimated. But good taste and good business sense rarely walk hand in hand
Even ppl in their 20s are over open bar. It’s a silly way to build morale. Give us the cash to help us pay our bills. Bc we haven’t had a raise in over 2 years. Or send us to a conference. With all respect, I don’t need or appreciate the free booze
My company throws huge open bar parties for us (5000+ people) FOUR times a year. I should appreciate it but it feels irresponsible. I wish they spent it on our shitty production budgets or media buys instead. #notinmy20s
Yes. It’s weird. I’d rather they cancel the party and cut us all a check for $100 or whatever they can afford.
These parties are wayyyy more than $100pp
Starcom is flying in their employees from NYC, LA, and Detroit to the Chicago office for the holiday party, putting everyone up in hotels for two nights. Such an insane way to spend money. Thanks for the $100 yearly bonus though - goes so far!!
No one is pressuring you to go or partake on the $100. Take the day off instead!
A non- agency place I used to work once cancelled the holliday party, used the budget to donate to charity and had a potluck. It was great for morale and there was no fancy venue or open bar.
Parties are financially planned prior year (in most cases)
Yep.
I’ve worked at several agencies that canceled or postponed the holiday party because of layoffs. It’s the right thing to do. You can always have a post-holiday party for the survivors. Or you can just send a passive-aggressive agency email saying, “Be glad you have a job. The drink cart comes around at 5. One beer limit."
It’s not hard to reallocate funds. Lots of places don’t book that far in advance. I think it’s extremely poor taste.
Not to mention, if it wasn’t this thread, it would be the “What kind of monsters cancel the holiday party” thread.
No, holiday parties are important for morale and should happen within reason. If it's less than median salary of 1 - 2 employee's it's reasonable.
But if there’s no strippers and coke, how will we know Havas is still edgy?
The holiday party in Chicago is such a joke.. if you’re going to pay for flights and hotel, take us somewhere warm like Miami 🙄
Oh look it’s THIS topic that comes up every year
It is very easy to judge executives without having the immense pressure of what it takes to make the tough decisions that come along with running a publicly traded company. For starters, the entertainment budget is judged differently to the salary costs budget, and not sure what kind of party is happening but it rarely adds up to the average salary of one person, let alone many when lay offs are having to take place. As an Advertising Executive, I can safely say that there is never a time when any of us are looking forward to layoffs, and by the time they take place, we have had a multitude of rounds of proposals with varying degrees of ideas on how to find savings without having to term anyone. Trust me, as hard as recruiting is, highly doubt anyone is taking those decisions lightly. Therefore, why not have the party if cancelling it is not going to make a difference in layoffs.
They’re a waste. Most people don’t even want to go to begin with, and those who do are ass kissers. Executives go to gloat on their “success” and jerk each other off. There,. I said it.
Agree with @Digitas 1. That money has been earmarked a long time ago with all much of the overhead. Seen layoffs happen right before a big founders day or holiday party.
One year my agency had a “Santa’s in the red”’party in the parking lot with beer and wine, a dance floor, a playlist and a taco truck. One of the best ever.
If it was ever cancelled, there would be an even bigger revolt. And I don’t think people REALLY want the $150 (taxed) instead.
The Leo holiday party is the most excessive of all
