It makes business sense, because you need to raise morale even more when the office is being decimated. But good taste and good business sense rarely walk hand in hand
Even ppl in their 20s are over open bar. It’s a silly way to build morale. Give us the cash to help us pay our bills. Bc we haven’t had a raise in over 2 years. Or send us to a conference. With all respect, I don’t need or appreciate the free booze
See: Omnicom Media Group thread about “Jingle and Mingle” they are having in their office. Likely with no alcohol. Promise you, employees are not happy with the downgrade.
Why not hold a simple poll on what employees want for the holidays? Let the people decide!!
Shh that's democracy. Nobody like that, silly.
Party offsets you know, zero end of year bonuses for employees, and officers pitch in 💰, unless that changed, so drink up johnnies!
Good bonuses, reasonable budgets and profitability are also good for moral.
That’s wild and def excess Starcom 1. Wonder how they got the go on they one
You guys are boring as f*
Yes companies here in the US should never have any fun because life is harder elsewhere in the World. Maybe instead companies should throw Remorse parties where we can all flog ourselves until we feel the requisite amount of guilt and self loathing for living here.
Everything would be different if we unionised 😛
It’s actually worse when there is no party or it’s a bad party. Might as well try to have a good time even when the business is tough and the budget has been earmarked. Just realize that at most agencies the party is for everyone, including the office managers and finance people on the backend who aren’t going to be invited to any thinkLA or VEVO parties like the majority of people on the media side
Quick follow up. Just realized my company is not having a holiday party. Also realized I don’t feel any particular way about it.
Yes totally inAppropriate
What about us throwing away food when the rest of the world is starving? Or worrying about the late pick up from Uber when kids in some countries have to hike 10-20 miles to school... yup..
Nope. But petty employees should make sure a few former employees are present
People like to complain no matter what the scenario is. There’s another thread on here complaining about how the holiday party has been moved to January when people have more time to attend. If your company did layoffs and then told everyone else they were canceling the holiday party too, people would be pissed about that. What happened to just saying thank you and appreciating the things your company does for it’s employees. If you don’t drink and don’t like it, then don’t go. It’s a nice way to say thank you and do something nice but people find a way to complain, complain, complain.
Yes agreed. Our office experienced some layoffs the past couple years, so our office cancelled the huge expensive parties. Which is tough, because you want to keep morale up, but also want to keep as many jobs as possible. And if throwing small parties at the office with snacks and a few bottles of wine does it, then I suppose it’s worth it. I’m just worried the big fun parties won’t come back even when the office is doing well again and we aren’t experiencing anymore layoffs
Tone deaf
I think it depends a lot on the scenario. If the agency lost a big account it doesn't matter if they are throwing a party or not. I doubt that an agency like wieden layoff people because the business is bad for them. So they will keep the party up for those who work hard can relax. Also wk founders day is super fun and people really look forward to it. Bit can definitely look bad on some other scenarios and I've been there. Everyone underpaid, working their asses off, shitty bonus, no raises and the company decides to go rafting.
@CD3 a bit much!! Lol
Absolutely.
Agree, let’s find better ways so spend discretionary funds.
