Does anyone work at a firm where only the attorneys get offered a 401k and company match with a legit company but everyone else only gets offered the state 401k if they want it that isn’t even affiliated w the firm & no watch bc it’s not through the firm? This kinda feels like discrimination that only attorneys get offered this benefit and the rest of us don’t.. is this common?

My firm doesn’t even allow me to have a 401k until I’ve worked with them for a year which I think is awful. 😢

like

Yeah, mine hasn’t either. Worked here for 7. They only offer health insurance. But I recently brought it up to my boss and he was like we do have it and it’s really good and matched! And I’m like wtf? And then I find out it’s only for the attorneys..

Apparently only attorneys deserve to retire?

My firm gives 7.5 percent to your 401(k) regardless of whether or not you contribute after your first full year of employment.

like

My last firm contribute 10% of total compensation no matter you contribute 401K or not. My current firm only contribute 6% but do another 1.5% if you max up your 401K.

like

These are nice matching benefits. My current firm does 6% but my prior firm only did 3%

I wouldn’t use the word discrimination, but they certainly have made it obvious who they find important and who isn’t. I wouldn’t work there.

like

That’s crazy… the firm I’m at offers that to everyone but we can’t defer into the 401k until 6 months of employment

Ya I left my old firm because we had no benefits. I now get matched 401k.

So my fiancée and I are relatively late in terms of finally landing well paying jobs and being able to save money instead of living paycheck to paycheck. We’re both 36 and currently rent a 2 bedroom in NY and have a combined savings of $35,000 which she wants to use as a down payment on a condo. I kinda just wanna continue saving while renting. I also literally just started contributing to my 401K so I’m also late in the game for that too.

Has anyone dealt with a lack of praise from attorneys? I'm not someone who needs to hear "good job" all the time, but we just got a huge deal closed that I worked really hard on and had a lot of overtime. And once it closed, the lead attorney praised the other attorneys, and said nothing about me or my work. I might just be overly sensitive, but it kind of stung. Thoughts?
