I’ve been trying to get into the top tier Associate Product Marketing Manager position Google for some time now for just an interview and I feel like business majors somehow have such a stronger chance in getting interviewed especially my business school and I feel really discouraged as an Econ Major and I have a lot of marketing experience that I’ve built over the years. Are there any non-business majors in the tech realm in non technical positions at Google that can advise me?

In giant agencies, I doubt it. We’re just numbers on a ledger.
In smaller places where the people holding the purse strings actually know you - maybe.
Good point. I’m a bit biased towards big agencies because that where I worked.
Got laid off a few years ago, I was the only art director who showed up to help on a pitch. A week later I was gone.

Totally agree. As a business owner I’m loyal to people who make “it” happen. It’s not about crazy hours, it’s about people who care about the company, the results and the team. They will work longer hours if it’s needed, you don’t need to put it on them. I will cut my salary to zero but keep these people around.
My opinion is no. At the end of the day it’s a numbers game.
But there’s this notion that you can make yourself indispensable by working harder. End of the day, working 50 hrs vs 100 hrs / week won’t really matter in the long run. Why kill yourself and your mental health?
From what I’ve seen, no. It comes down to numbers and politics much more often than timesheets

I agree that while it could affect your reputation if leadership knows you personally, it typically doesn’t seem to make a difference in a larger company setting. So overall I’d say working yourself to death for a corporation is not the most valuable use of your time/energy/mental health.
Something that’s always saved me when lay-offs come around is having some freelance on the side. So I’d say if you really want to — and have the time to — work late nights and weekends, imo it’s a better investment to put time in something like that. That way, if your hard work for that company doesn’t pay off then you still have something to keep you afloat. Hope this helps!

The other factor is how clients bill. Usually they're paying for headcount, not talent.
Not in a big place. I worked at near killing myself pace for years, agency-side. Didn’t matter when layoffs came.
