Does your firm make allowances to billable hours for PTO/sick leave? Every firm I’ve been to has been “billing 9-12 hours a day until you make up the deficit.” That shit ain’t right, but curious if others have a different experience.

My firm (like many others) likes to boast about its “unlimited vacation and sick leave,” but every time I’ve been sick I’ve just found myself working extra hours to make up the time, and my “vacation time” slips away every time I have a slow week with not a lot to do.

Billable hours... If I make $100K, which is ~$50/hr, how much does the agency mark it up? Double? If I’m dedicated to an acct, and work 60 hrs in a week, do they bill time and a half after 40? I assume that’s all negotiated in contracts, but I’ve never peeked behind this curtain before.

Recent lateral junior associate in brand new practice where I'm the only associate. I'm probably going to bill 1,500 hours max this year due to being very slow and taking time off for a delayed honeymoon which I disclosed during my interview process. I have been told my work product is good, I don't turn anything down, I participate in non-billable work, I'm responsive and I always let people know I'm available to help. Do I need to be worried about getting fired for low hours?

Monday morning and the only thing that goes through my mind is wow I hate my job. Between the strict requirement of releasing billing time daily, high billable goal and I guess a heavy workload (and everything that comes with living through a pandemic) it’s hard to start my day excited for work. And I hate it. Makes me question why I’m doing this for a living.

Looking for feedback on Meta work life balance. Current interviewing for a lead counsel role and would be coming in from biglaw. I’m trying to get a sense of what to expect if I decided to make the switch since I’ve never seconded or worked anywhere other than biglaw. Currently at a firm with 1950 expectation, which I barely meet each year. Getting tired on billing, late nights and non billable work but am still looking for interesting work, just with consistent M-F, 9-5. Sound possible?

Mid-30s first year and already tired. Should I look for a non-firm job? I worked in the corporate and government worlds before law school. Just graduated and working at a boutique firm, but I'm just...tired. I don't feel like I have the fire in my belly I had when I was fresh out of college, and getting just six billable hours a day seems grueling. I also have imposter syndrome and anxiety about messing up. Will I eventually hit my stride and feel energized by my work instead of drained?

The recent most billable hours post, inspired me. What is your longest billable day? Mine was 56 hours straight with no break—and the partner was more than a jerk when I was saying no more at the 30 hour point. That was two 24 hour billable days back to back on my time sheet and on the bill, a 360 hour month, and 650 aggregated for two months. And it is one reason (of so many reasons) why this job can suck so much! At least I got a good bonus...

First trimester pregnant and not feeling great- I’m a junior who just lateraled. I get to the office later/start working later, find myself naturally slower, generally uninterested, and demotivated. I’m so exhausted- I feel like my head will explode by only 4 pm. Does anyone have a similar experience? What were your typical billable days during this time? Did anyone make comments about you not pulling your weight? Any other insights? Thanks!

Been an attorney for almost 10 years, but recently moved from public sector (prosecutor) to civil litigation at small firm (5 attys). Firm doesn't have a stated billable goal (but partners aim for 1500 to have an "acceptable year"), my work is entirely dependent on partners throwing me scraps, but they have told me not to worry about billables while acclimating. Consider myself lucky or be stressed that I won't be earning my keep if I don't hit a certain number?

I'm a little confused about billable hours "requirements." Are they actual requirements like if you don't meet your 1,800/2,000/2,200 or whatever requirement you're at risk for termination or is it just to be bonus eligible?

I vacationed on a luxury ($40M) yacht this past week. The owner is a family friend and owns a Hedge Fund. I realized that in order to generate real wealth you have to own your own business. The small increments I get for promotions will never allow me to create real wealth. Starting my own business seems like it will cost my mental and physical health. The American Dream of making it from the bottom to the top seems “almost” unattainable. Anyone else feel this way?
