As a manager, I do not expect anyone to attend a meeting while on PTO. I respect my team's time off. If something is so important that everyone needs to attend, I'll record the meeting and have it available for anyone who missed it. That manager needs to take a step back and really think about what they have done and why they have such an expectation to begin with. I would report this to HR since the time off was probably on the calendar for quite some time so it was not a surprise to them.
Don’t go to HR they are not your friend.
If you go to HR the first person HR person will call is your boss to put a plan in place to keep from being sued and getting rid of you.
As a manager I expect meetings to be covered while someone is out, which requires the employee on PTO to coordinate ahead of time. Often that means I attend the meeting on their behalf, which is fine if I know ahead of time. I just don’t want to be surprised/hear about it last minute. My manager expects the same from me. If I send a delegate that person should be prepared to handle basic questions that would’ve been asked of me at the meeting.
Exactly - meetings need to be covered, everyone on the team is responsible for making sure there is coverage or delegate or the meeting is moved . This sounds like a junior person taking no responsibility and just going on vacation and then the team was left to figure it out?
I don’t believe that someone gave their team a heads up, planned to be away, helped make sure there was coverage, reminded the team before vacation they were going to be out and then got in “trouble” for not being on the call.
That is insane. I would have missed the meeting as well. Of course I would decline the meeting for that event. But I’m surprised you got written up for that.
Report the Manager to your Partner and to HR. We don't need people like this destroying our culture. PTO is TIME OFF.
Get ahead of it - "I'll be out, is there anything you need from me? Here's the status of my items"
I never treated PTO as a request. I say "here are my plans" and then figure they'd let me know if it's a problem.
I’m pretty sure that is illegal. PTO does not mean you have to show up for a meeting on your time off.
I would have challenged my manager to a fist fight.
Wow most definitely not - your manager has issues …. Definitely decline any meeting requests prior, and send “all day” calendar invite saying you’re on leave.
Pro
Definitely not
That’s the culture in big 4. There’s really no such thing as PTO.
This is not a big 4 thing at all
Does your manager check in with your team when he's on PTO ?
You should speak with an employment lawyer.
No that’s not Normal for your manager to expect you attending the meeting on a PTO day. I would discusss that with SM or PPMD. Unless you were communicated before that you must attend the meeting regardless of PTO or not, there is no valid basis for your manager to act like that.
No that’s a DOL violation
Nope. It’s unrealistic and unreasonable to ask for you to join a check in meeting while on PTO. What if you’re traveling or having a medical procedure done that you don’t want people knowing about. If that is ever the expectation, I would either ask to reschedule or write an email before Im on PTO informing them of anything I would have brought up at the meeting.
I've never in my life heard of this. The O stands for OFF. As in OFF work. I would report to his superior and HR.
Must definitely not. That’s your PTO, part of your contract.
We are client serving, this is very naive for a senior manager
Time to speak to HR.
PTO is paid time off. That means you are off the clock and have no responsibilities to the company during that time. Your manager should be pissed at you is if you didn't inform the manager you were on PTO and you should have. Or if you told the manager that you would check in while on PTO. Other than that, your manager has no basis for being pissed at you.
Not at all. I’ve led teams that spanned the globe. I never expected anyone to join weekly team meetings when on PTO or holiday. Unless it was a last-minute thing, I knew they would be out and I would discuss any deliverables before hand. And when I went on PTO, I put together a summary for my boss of who is handling what.
