Does your manager expect you to be available for "mandatory" meetings when you're on PTO? We have weekly mandatory check in meetings, but I assumed if we were on PTO, we could miss these meetings. Well, I returned from PTO to a write up and a pissed off manager because I missed the meeting when I was out of the office...

As a manager, I do not expect anyone to attend a meeting while on PTO. I respect my team's time off. If something is so important that everyone needs to attend, I'll record the meeting and have it available for anyone who missed it. That manager needs to take a step back and really think about what they have done and why they have such an expectation to begin with. I would report this to HR since the time off was probably on the calendar for quite some time so it was not a surprise to them.

likesmart

Don’t go to HR they are not your friend.
If you go to HR the first person HR person will call is your boss to put a plan in place to keep from being sued and getting rid of you.

As a manager I expect meetings to be covered while someone is out, which requires the employee on PTO to coordinate ahead of time. Often that means I attend the meeting on their behalf, which is fine if I know ahead of time. I just don’t want to be surprised/hear about it last minute. My manager expects the same from me. If I send a delegate that person should be prepared to handle basic questions that would’ve been asked of me at the meeting.

like

Exactly - meetings need to be covered, everyone on the team is responsible for making sure there is coverage or delegate or the meeting is moved . This sounds like a junior person taking no responsibility and just going on vacation and then the team was left to figure it out?

I don’t believe that someone gave their team a heads up, planned to be away, helped make sure there was coverage, reminded the team before vacation they were going to be out and then got in “trouble” for not being on the call.

if you’re off, you’re off. this is bizarre behavior on the managers part.

like

Definitely unusual. As someone else said though, be proactive and remind people of your PTO (I ask my team to put their PTO on my calendar) and set the expectation that you will not be attending. I would take your “write up” to the next level.

like

Similar to what RSM2 wrote above, I have seen people over the last few years do the following: for the 2 months leading up to any out of office dates, they actually put "Upcoming Out of Office: Sept 5-10, Oct 12-18" (etc.) in bold red font in their email signatures. So anyone who they deal with on a regular basis is getting multiple reminders every time the person sends an email. Cool thing that I started seeinf a couple of years ago.

When i was at EY, I planned PTO then my manager found out and planned PTO the same week as me because she didnt want to deal with the offshore team meetings.

I think said manager has been fired.

smart

P=personal. I don't think I believe this comment 100%. Everyone has time off. Everyone will miss meetings due to that fact. I would have words with that manager, for sure.

We never expect anyone on PTO to be on meeting calls UNLESS we have something urgent and we’ve discussed it with them beforehand to make sure it works for them.

I have an offer for a company abroad. Originally they wanted me to fly out and start the day after Thanksgiving (not celebrated in their country), but because of the holidays I suggested starting in either December or January with the ability to take some holiday days in December to fly back home for Christmas. They then proposed starting out remotely “as soon as possible” in the US as a contractor and then moving abroad to start full time abroad. (Cont)
