Positives 1. Southwest has never had involuntary layoffs (unique for the industry) This is a massive perk. If you spend 6 months trying to find your next job during a downturn that is a huge benefit that can quickly offset a higher salary somewhere else. 2. It is a great industry to work in. The smell of aviation fuel is addicting (industry joke). 3. The culture at SWA is great. They have tons of events and truly recognize their people in meaningful ways. Its actually quite special. 3. 401k is 9.3% vested over 5 years which really locks people in, but it racks up a super sweet balance to offset that low base salary. 4. Free travel can be great.... 5. One of the most conservative airlines, from a business perspective, which feeds into point 1 (job stability), but it also drives point 4 in the negatives ( decision by committee)
Negatives 1. Career progression is VERY VERY slow. You are waiting for someone to die, retire or leave because they cannot get promoted. I know multiple MBB types that have left due to this issue. 2. Its all about connections. If you want a new role you will spend months nurturing the relationships needed to even be considered for the role. In most companies, this is for higher up positions. At SWA this takes place at the low levels. 3. The pay is ...... and the hours can be massive (team depending). They make-up for it through flexing their strong culture. Essentially, drink the Kool-Aid and forget that you're underpaid and never calculate your hourly rate (its depressing) 4. They will not take risks or change. EVERYTHING goes to a committee. EVERYTHING needs to be socialized. 5. Staff travel (free) isnt what it used to be. With more advanced yield systems and practices, airlines around the world can quickly shift their capacity. So its good, but its a lot tougher than it was say 5 years ago.
All in all, if you want a great opportunity to have stability and focus on your family they are a great place to work. If you want to DRIVE a career and you care about seeing progress (within the next 2 years) I would not go there. SWA has to fit your time in life and career aspirations more than you would consider for most employers.
thank you for the insights

Work will be fun but pay won’t be there
thank you.
Depends where you are in your career/life. Great WLB, not a lot of turnover. Total benefits are good. Pay is okay but they make up for it with other perks. Good place to settle in for a bit. Big drawback I would say is- airline/travel industry has a lot of layoffs.
thank you, i'm transitioning from government consulting so its not like my WLB ever suffered too much lmao
Their baggage folks always look happy in those commercials.
