In FSO specifically, you're going to be stuck in that role without mobility for a looooong time. Unlike other sectors, the upward mobility is rough if you exit too junior. You're going to be doing production type work all day. Stay a few more years and you can exit as the controller for a small fund instead which is WAY better for your career for example. Don't be tempted by a short term 30% boost which will impair you for many years in the future.
At another firm half my audit team in FS were ex State Street employees who did outsourced fund accounting. They joined the firm because they wanted upward mobility. Many had been at State Street for like 5 years without promotion.
Think about it more carefully.
Work life balance will definitely be better. It’s a 9-5 type of place. Concerned about upward movement though.
Ok, so then you have to think about what your short term objectives are. For example, you could approach this opportunity as an opportunity to use this new job as leverage from a salary perspective, for if/when you make your next move.
Have you posed the upward movement question during your interview with the potential new employer? If you haven’t already, you may want to ask that follow up question.
From the surface - significant pay increase, better work life balance...sounds like a win/win. It all depends how skin deep you want to get
Would be the most junior position on the team. Opinions? Should I try and negotiate a title of “Senior Fund Accountant”? I feel like the responsibilities line up with a senior accountant role. Does it matter? Would it look better in the future when trying to leave?
You’re getting a 30% bump in pay for a jr. position. If there’s room for upward movement, if you feel that it is a good fit for you career wise, and it gives you comparable or better work/life balance, then go for it. If you leave your current firm, leave on good terms, in the event you boomerang back, or decide to go back out to PA
I’ve head from several recruits that it is mind-numbingly boring.
