I hope you didn’t do it right before Christmas
What's the window of time in which this comment shouldn't make me feel worse for the fact that the pip ended in December?
I’ve had to let people go that real skills. Those skills just weren’t adaptable to the position at hand. In those instances, I make sure they know that and I offer to support them in their search for a new position by writing a nice reference letter and/ or offering to be a reference in general. BUT I don’t do this for everyone! I only endorse folks that I truly believe in.
I’ve also offered to help with their resume.
Appreciate that you feel like crap because you are a compassionate person. You’ll get over it in time, but it’s NEVER easy. When you see people who have been terminated go on to roles that allow them to thrive in their careers, it’s gratifying. Of course we always wish we could give them that in their current roles, but it’s kinder to let them find it elsewhere if it’s not possible.
Agree with this perspective. I’ve been fortunate enough to not have to fire someone directly but it happened with a member of my team and they were able to start fresh at a new role that was a better fit for them and their career ambitions. While I know it was devastating for them to go through, I’m happy to see them be able to grow and recognize that this didn’t wholly hinder their career. (I also recognize this is easy for me to say when I was directly involved or impacted. Someone losing their job for whatever reason is never easy, full stop.)
Compassion is a noble and healthy emotion. However, make sure that you also like taking care of your team's wellbeing, holding individuals responsible for their own actions, and implementing just and acceptable punishments.
Terminating/firing someone is such a difficult thing to do. And it never gets easy. Find comfort in knowing that you did whatever you can to avoid their termination and that you didn't just fired them on a whim for unjust reasons.
