You could volunteer at the SBA… gives you face time with individuals looking to start or grow their businesses… join your local chamber of commerce and attend networking events…
An arm and a leg is subjective… $25k, $50k, $100k per project… that’s usually normal for someone being an ‘angel’ investor… you’d need to fund purchase orders or fund designs and patents which is expensive on its own… if you’re talking $1k, $5k, even $10k… you’d be better off just buying a high risk ETF or MF…
What options exist for high risk ETF and MF? Also can you recommend local groups for NYC/NJ area?

I have not done any angel investing, but have a few close friends who have.
Most angels start by investing in friends and/or former coworkers that they believe in. The term “angel” often indicates that they aren’t expecting returns. Most angel investors will expect that only 1 out of every 20 to 30 investments actually returns any money (and that return often takes 5 to 15 years to happen), so you should expect that the money you are investing is “gone”.
If you’re looking for a more predictable private investment mechanism, you may want to consider becoming a “hard money lender” for real estate investors. It’s still high risk, but way less risky than angel investing, way shorter timelines, and still higher returns than the stock market.
How do I become a hard money lender for investing in real estate? Are there any platforms or such?
Ignite funding is a platform for this (have not personally invested, but know a couple who have)

This is the real question.
I am trying to diversify my portfolio and want to make sure I have long term or higher returns. I know real estate, ETFs, SBA, or teaming up with VCs, pre IPO companies etc is the way but trying to gain some insights and knowledge on the process and where to start.

Actually, it is not generally true that the higher the risk, the higher the reward. There are a lot of uncompensated risks.
