Why does consulting attract so many socially awkward people?

Uhh... relative to other lines of work, I don’t think it does...

Most of us are paid to not be socially awkward

I’ve wondered this for years, and came up with a few answers. The broad answer seems to be that our job favors some unconventional or mildly sociopathic traits, and people exhibiting those traits self-select into this career. Traits such as:

1. Being ok with being away from home, friends and family for indefinite periods of time
2. Acting as if you are an expert in a field you know little to nothing about
3. Having an answer to every question, i.e., seldom admitting that you’re wrong
4. Being taught from early on that you’re a “brain for hire”, and therefore MUST be smarter than the average bear

I definitely am more introverted at work than I am outside of work but generally I would say you're off with this one. most consultants are pretty extroverted if you ask me but then again I'm in human capital

Does anyone else have that one person who is more senior than you that is just always so condescending while adding no value themselves? I have a director who I work with (not in my direct mgmt line) that just treats everyone on my team so poorly, so I act as the shield and it’s so annoying how someone who is so disrespectful and honestly not super value-added only ask for data/questions and not provide any genuine input or recommendations.

My boss in my creative agency threatened to fire me because I, a male, came into work with my nails painted. HR is having a very complicated day today as I found out I could take legal action if he does fire me since we don't have an established dress code that has any guidelines against male nail polish wearing.

My boss (atty) is so disorganized! I’ve been with him 6 months and he’s having a hard time delegating, sharing info and managing deadlines. I’ve organized the caseload to manage the deadlines. He says he wants me to help with discovery but when I offer to start on one, he says he needs to do it. (Since he might have to present as evidence) When I give him deadlines and ask for the docs he says he’ll get to it. It’s a small 1 man firm, and I’m the first assistant besides his wife. Any advice?

How to handle working with someone who frustrates you immensely? I work with someone who is one level above me hierarchically and is an ultimate micromanager (not one agenda or recap can be without edits) and is rude about establishing that they have dominance. The more senior leaders on the team are awesome and so is the client. It’s this one coworker who just got promoted and is now stepping on me constantly. Thanks!

What’s the fashion fishes opinion on the optimal work bag. Brief case feels out of date, backpack too juvenile. What’s the new gold standard?

I just finished a big jury trial with a senior partner (SP). There were co-parties w/separate counsel. SP mentally checked out, to the point that co-counsel was asking what SP was doing/if SP was okay. I ended up handling most everything. SP did a few parts but went rogue and did things that were offensive/risky/bad for client. It became clear that SP is not performing like SP used to and may be a liability. Do I tell someone at my firm? Don’t want to offend SP or cause drama, but I’m concerned.

Hi. People Manager here. I've been one for 12 years now and I encourage my team to not be "yes" people. At this time, it feels like my manager wants me and my team to be yes people for her. How do I deal with this? I've never been a yes person and I don't preach this to my reports. I don't know what to do. Help?

Maybe if you’re a staff and if the manager is on a phone call with two partners, he shouldn’t have to tell you twice to STFU.
