For those who have gone from Big 4 to Regional or even local firm, what's been your experience, both good and bad? I've learned from my experiences so far that I'm mostly interested in working with MM companies in a consultative/advisory capacity and not being a controller/FP&A manager at a mega corp. Goal would be to work for a smaller accounting firm and make Partner, understanding upside comp is a bit capped. What're the pros and cons of this path for those that are on it/did it?

MM firms will all be eaten up by PE in the next few years. Either stay in the B4 or go local. There’s risk in local firms but if you have a direct path to partner, you will have more control over your destiny

I have two close friends who took a risk and moved to local firms from B4. Both were “big fish in a small pond” situations where they joined with set expectations of quickly making partner and they both have. I’m kind of jealous! They both work long hours during tax seasons but outside of that have great work life balance and make a lot of money. Honestly seems like one of the best routes to take right now for someone who would get stalled out in the B4 at the SM or Director level.

I am not sure I understand the question. Are you looking for the differences in the day to day work? What it takes to make partner?

I work on the advisory side that you mentioned; some good days, some bad, generally 45-50 hours a week with some lighter periods maybe every 4-6 months.

Don’t hold your breath on becoming an equity partner. In case you haven’t heard, PE has entered our industry… Baker Tilly was sadly one of the first few and it is official as of this summer. It’s all KPIs and “why didn’t you bill the exact number of hours you estimated 6 months ago when we told you this was just a draft estimate for funsies”.

Love my team and have grown disdain for the firm. A lot has changed since mid 2010s.

Or go to industry and all of your problems will be solved

Yes, I did this - as an experienced manager with PwC and moved to a boutique consulting firm that was subsequently acquired by CBIZ. I am in the private equity advisory practice with CBIZ. CBIZ is a publicly traded company so not at the same risk of being taken over by PE as many other public accounting firms. Certainly pros and cons of going from B4 partnership to publicly traded company structure/audit vs advisory vs industry roles/ large to MM clients. I shifted from F100 clients to middle market, and haven’t looked back. Would be happy to share any perspective.

You would be surprised how competitive pay in MM firm is compared to B4. I know several partners that moved to MM firms some as small as top 40 and are making 40% more than Big4. No ltcp though. But that will be gone in b4 in next 10-15 years as margins continue to erode.

1) Let’s say you’re a recent undergrad candidate with no internships on your resume. What’s the deciding factor that you’re qualified for Advisory vs Tax vs Audit? Is it school, gpa, etc.?

2) Why can’t you switch from Tax to another SL without having to pull strings? I understand that there’s a difference in tax vs book experience but why does the Accounting field gatekeep other SLs? It’s not like we’re incapable of learning other areas.

I’ve been told my company is changing my title from Associate Director of BD to Sales Executive. I’m concerned it reads like a title demotion. Is it just semantics? For context, it’s a professional services firm, I’ve been there 3+years, and they gave a Sales Executive title to someone who just started 5mo ago.
