Genuine question: why are men usually appointed way less paternity leave than women are appointed maternity leave? I know some companies are getting better about this but many more should support the nuclear family.

Why not let both parents spend the first several weeks at home together with their newborn? 🤔

Companies don’t want to pay any leave but it’s easier to get away with it with men because they aren’t the ones physically recovering. The US is also a great example of corporations won’t do things just because, the government should mandate it but they won’t.

Yes, but then those of us advocating for it are accused of being "socialist."

like

Totally agree. My husband was allowed to take off ONE week when we had our baby, which was considered a generous paternity leave. Our culture really doesn't value fathers' involvement in family life

like

And there’s no thought given to how mom is supposed to manage with only one week of support and then left to do it all alone smh

It is a cultural issue. While the incoming generations are more open to shared parental duties, outgoing generations have historically expected males to be bread winners while the female tends to child rearing.

Leaders of most organizations are still dominated by the old thinking, which is why it is still a WIP for these ideas to be challenged and replaced with more modern thinking.

like

This makes sense! It’s still very sad though because paternity leave usually is / should be still paid time off. That means the husband can still be the bread winner while helping out at home, in my opinion

like

I totally agree from this as I have suffered due to it.

like

I’m sorry that had happened to you. Some companies have better policies than others but overall, the system sucks in this regard

Companies that are subject to the FMLA MUST provide up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave. But few men take it for fear of damaging their careers (sound familiar, working mothers?).

And a big chunk of "maternity leave" is MEDICAL leave, since birthing a baby does enormous damage to the body.

I don't disagree that we have misplaced priorities when it comes to fathers, but remember, too, that someone has to continue to earn.
