Depends on the situation. Families, especially those Muslim/Middle Eastern/Brown families can be extremely unreasonable and selfish when it comes to relationships. Have seen maybe 20+ relationships amongst my friends fail mainly because the Muslim parents weren't accepting of the 'boyfriend or girlfriend' (even when the boyfriend of girlfriend was also Muslim/Brown)...in my opinion that's not fair and this isn't the backwards society like it is in Pakistan or India, so if parents push back, the kids need to push back harder and ignore them
Depends. If the person is actually a good genuine person and family isn't accepting because of race, religion, culture then LOVE. You will live with that person forever, you don't live with fam forever. But, if family is providing sound advice based on warning signs they see in character then Fam all the way!
Family will come around plus they will love when grandkids come around 🤗
FYI I'm Brown and Muslim too.
My husband chose love over family and his family is slowly coming around to me. I was from a lower class and totally different world than them and they were nothing but rude to me...it's slowly changing. And love is always worth it OP 💜
Their typical response to all the positives is "that's not rare". Example: she is a SM in big 4, answer: everyone works, what's the big deal? She is an MBA from Columbia, answer: everyone studies, no one remains illiterate. I don't think there is a win. Anyways, this was worth the vent :) thank ya'll
OP, your family sounds absolutely psychotic - good luck with that. They sound like the type of people who would find fault with a world renowned human rights lawyer who saves the world. Basically it's just a cover for being racist.
I'm with SC1. Basically, screw 'em. Do what you want and let the chips fall where they may. You are responsible for your own happiness, not everyone else's.
OP, I was in a similar situation and chose love. Moved out, parents didn't talk to me for a while, eventually they got over it. Now I have my SO (who I'm not married to but I live with), and I regularly visit my parents on weekends. They'll come around when they realize you won't back down.
Who's family? And what kinda love?
:/ your own family and love as in your mr/miss right.
A3, same concept applies. I know many gay guys, almost all Muslim who got married to women because of parental pressure and the obsession to remain closeted. They still screw around with guys on the side. Your Ques is a bit different than OPs..
Family should advice, but then allow you to make and learn from own mistakes. I won't ever make my children chose between my love/support and the love of someone else. Whoever is making me choose is the one that goes
Would seem to me that "the one" should also fit well with your family, that's what I use as a gauge
P2- that's a totally different scenario. That's not about your family not accepting your SO, it's about your family not accepting YOU
Thanks for the responses. My family did not give her a chance at all due to wealth and "does not fit with our societal expectations" reasons, have no idea what kind of person she is or can be and ignore everything good about her. But I fought for it and though they (parents) are coming around my siblings have essentially broken relations with me. Yes I'm brown.
Wow, this is just rediculous
*Ridiculous
OP care to go into more details?
Love always
Choosing love is not being deceitful and they'll definitely come around eventually. Wish you the best of luck!
Considering that their reasoning is so superficial, I'm sure the family will eventually come around. In the meantime, highlight all of the positives about your SO so that they can begin to see what you see.
