Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.

Welcome to the softer skills you get to develop in consulting! You can do this.

Ehhh. Just put time lines on your waterfall and if they request new stuff tell them that all the timelines update (push out) to make it agile =]
"XYZ feature will be covered in the next sprint"

More like welcome to agile operations. Odds are that the client will take anything that gets the deliverables done, and that your team will leave a trail of questionable engineering that will only be a problem long after you're gone. Whoever put this team together screwed up, but you can't fix that. Do your best, and take the opportunity to try your hand at leadership and to learn new tech. Finally, don't stress out about others' mistakes.
Yep. This happens! And it’s whoever put the deal together that’s to blame.
Forgot to mention
- government client
- half the team are union
- Cut rate independent tableau dev who they hired bc he's $30 cheaper than one of ours insists it takes 2 hours to do 3 label changes.
- project sponsor legit said Agile means being able to add features without increasing timeline or budget.
Somehow I've managed to manhandle us through our first release actually on schedule.... and I'm rewarding myself with an hour of sending out resumes.
😥
Forget about work-life balance, your life expectancy will reduce by a year 🤣
It's called a resignation letter.
Quit complaining and deliver the goods. Glory to those who persevere. All the best!
1) The fact that I'm able to stick handle this herd of cats through a dumpster fire doesn't make it any less of a dumpster fire that never should have happened
2) In my experience, the lack of consideration/experience/skill that causes someone to put together a project like this also demonstrates a lack of appreciation for the work and skill salvaging it requires, and leads to a situation where if things go wrong, you're used as the scapegoat, and if you manage to pull it off... nothing, because acknowledging the heroic effort would mean acknowledging/understanding that they created a disaster in the first place.
Out of nowhere, throw the term "Tech debt" and observe the chaos that plays out...
Funniest thing I've read all day. 😂 You will get through this, just find the people that got swapped out to give high quality KT or firm resources to support. Which firm are you at?
