Give them the damn desk
Approve the damn desk. You’re going to lose $300 in productivity and sick time of you reject a standing desk for someone with back pain.
From the people side: Give it to them From the legal side: Get a policy together so that they know that they do not own the desk. The desk is a loaner due to condition and when their condition amends then it goes or should they leave the org then they give it back. A policy helps weed out the frauds. They won’t want to go through the motions of giving back a desk if they are just trying to get it for free then leave.
Also a cheaper option is an “ergo height adjustable monitor stand” they’re like $50, you put it on any surface. You can make it stand taller or go lower. Easy
Varidesks go for 150 - 300 Get the desk
In what world is the cost of this desk an issue? If this is sketchy, make a better policy for the future, but buy this desk.
Acupuncturists, massage therapists, and chiropractors can all get bad PR, but their treatments are covered by insurance providers (at least to some degree), and used for viable treatment therapies in auto accidents (auto policies will cover the cost of that). If you're really concerned about the validity, call the acupuncturist and verify credentials and statement. Double check your policy for what is and isn't allowed, in terms of practitioners. If it doesn't say, then allow it. But, like I said, call the acupuncturist and verify license/ credentials and recommendation if you're concerned about authenticity.
No. But you can call them to verify credentials if needed. I've had to do that before. Verifying the validity of a doctor note.
Give him the desk! Worth it 💯. You should actually give any employee that asks. Also get an Ergonomics Consultant; in case they need any other tools to make them more comfortable at work. It’s cheaper then workers comp claims and makes employees happy.
Yes much cheaper than Worker’s Comp.! And if you deny a request for a standing desk, that is amazing documentation for the employee to have if they were going to create a case!!
I literally had a candidate recently (1 year into working from home) start to look for another employer because she requested a standing desk for arthritis in her neck, found said desk for $200 and they would not get it. Get the desk!
The standing desks are not that expensive so saving time and trouble it’s prob best to purchase.
All companies should just get standing desks for their employees. No policy needed.
Sounds fishy but get the desk anyway
Pro
Get them a monitor stand, it's cheaper
COVID-19 has put a lot of check up appointments on back burner. If an employee is in pain they will seek treatment where they can get it. However, if the company is going to provide a desk the company should document and review what are the requirements to meet ADA (ie Does the note need to be from an MD). Can the company offer a reimbursement and cap it?
I would consider the note in regard to your medical coverage policy- how much would it cost for an employee to go to a primary care provider for something other than their annual physical? At PwC, on a high deductible plan, it will cost an employee about 150, to meet with a medical doctor for 15 minutes to request a note. THIS could definitely be why somebody chooses to talk to their acupuncturist!!
Yea for sure! Thanks to you for being aware of that fact. It cost me $300 to see my orthopedist for arthritis.
You’ve engaged in the interactive process. A standing desk is not unreasonable and juries and the EEOC would agree if it got to that point. You do have the right to request a second opinion at your cost but it’s not worth the issues that would come from it. I’d just get the desk.
give them the desk or varidesk.
Interesting culture you have there.
