Has anyone been successful in reversing burnout? I feel like I’m being dragged behind a truck most days, and every once in a while it stops and backs up over me for good measure. Taking an extended break is not an option, but I feel like I can’t keep up like this. It’s hard admitting to my manager that the workload is too much, but I’m doing way more in house than I did in private practice and making significantly less. Feels like something needs to give

Make a business case for additional headcount. Manage the headcount and push your work to them. I know people who have made their entire career doing this.

I took FMLA for burnout. Your firm doesn’t need to know what the reason is for a medical leave. In fact, Hr is the only department that is allowed to know why you are taking leave. Do it. Trust me.

Director, Legal 1–I’m on leave now partly for these types of reasons. Did you find a way to reconcile your values with your work? I’m planning a transition to in-house in the hope that it will help.

Taking an extended break is the only option.

Tell the manager it’s too much.

If you’re worrying about what they’ll think of you, they won’t. And if they don’t have any help, then lateral out. Going from in house to in house is significantly easier than breaking in house that first time.

Please read Burnout by Nagoski or listen to a podcast where they were guests.

You need to right-suze your workload. If that means you raise your contract review dollar threshold, or get more outside counsel help, or teach clients to be more self-sufficient, do it.

It can be used live in a meet and on an independent virtual day. In my google meets, I’m able to give feedback on any question they have trouble with in real time.

I’m in big law and on the cusp of making the jump to in-house. It sounds like the company I just interviewed with is getting ready to make me an offer. For example, it sounds like I should not expect a document management system, based on a prior post in this bowl. I’m guessing expenses like state bar fees and cell phone are not reimbursed.

Any advice on things to expect (or not expect)?

For those working in house, how much “from scratch” document drafting are you doing vs. reviewing and revising “outside documents”. For example, if your company wants to enter into a joint venture company with another entity, are you drafting the company agreement “from scratch” or is it based on internal forms? Or are you getting outside counsel to do it?
