100%. I’m in Vienna (very traditional and conservative) from LA (progressive and liberal).
My experience has been:
- close minded comments from people of all ages (sexist, racist, and nationalist) for really anything that is different… and it’s so white here 😳. I’ve never been surrounded by so many white people.
- lack of friendliness… it’s as if I’m inconveniencing a barista when I order a coffee
- short opening hours for everything (shops are closed by 7pm on Friday and even earlier on Saturdays and closed on Sunday. Therapists are like I work Tues - Thurs between 10am and 3pm 🤦🏻♀️)
- this attitude of “things never change — whether we want them to or not — so why try?” Whether it’s at work and pitching a new idea (a leader at my company said that “digital” was going to be a short lived buzz word /phase a few years ago or you run into shady practices in the legal system people just put up with it vs trying to push for change
- this goes hand in hand with “life is good, why change it?”. The lack of innovation and interest in innovation constantly surprises me. While I appreciate that people are relaxed and “living the good life” it just leads to people coasting — I’m missing the hunger to push and hustle
- women’s rights and rights in general are behind when it comes to reproductive health. It’s illegal to freeze your eggs unless you have a medical reason (ie about to go through cancer treatment) being older isn’t a reason. You can’t do IVF unless you’re in a heterosexual marriage; same with adoption. You can’t adopt a child that has an age gap greater than 40 years (so if you are 40, you can’t adopt a baby). Surrogacy isn’t legal.
- mental health is still taboo or not understood. I was denied insurance because I’m on a low grade antidepressant. Instead of seeing it as a positive that I’m managing my mental health
- don’t get me started on being vegan here 😂
I don’t know how it is nowadays in Austria but I’ve always been told by other expats that Austria is surreptitiously but deeply xeno-averse to put it that way. There’s a lot of tales I’ve heard of a non German ethnic native Austrian glass ceiling in most companies, maybe not the big 4 anymore but it’s probably the case in a lot of local companies. I think it’s interesting because the people I talked to only really seemed to majorly experience this once they’ve been in Austria for a while. I’ve been told to go anywhere but Austria in Europe if I really want to grow to a leadership position organically, because I’ll never get there if I’m not native even if I can speak German fluently.
The traffic lights being in your blind spot. Ugh 🚦🤦♂️
Whats the shock, out of curiosity? I’ve felt it as a European the opposite way
I’m culture shocked when it comes to dating here. I can’t with the whole tickie go Dutch thing😂😩
What were/ are you shocked about ? For me it was the opposite
I am sure there is a culture shock America is very different
I was watching what lost shocks Americans when they come to Europe, here are the top 4:
-WLB
-PTO
- cheaper healthcare (I heard ambulance fees in us are a couple thousand dollars a ride)
- little to no gun violence (no shooter drills in schools or even kindergartens)
My sister is at MSFT and my mom retired from Boeing 5 years ago,… their healthcare plans aren’t a part of our regular conversation topics, but sure, I heard it from my 3rd cousins old roommates’ wedding date 10 years ago. 🤦🏻♀️
Obviously it would be great if quality and coverage of healthcare wasn’t dependent on your job. I’m illustrating there is a range as of today
I could give you a workshop on Navigating Cultural Shock. My final graduate degree is Intercultural Communication and Management. It is totally normal to make observations. Just respect your host culture, learn about the history, norms and mores. Despite having lived in 7 counties and very multi-culti, I'm still in awe of the uniqueness of my hosts.
