Has anyone ever had to fire someone the same day they started? Because today was a first for me! We had a training group start today, one of the new trainees was supposed to be a CSR, not sure how she got hired because she was absolutely out of her mind. She kept leaving the training group and wandering into people’s offices and talking to them non-stop, but she ended up wandering into the CEO's office and cornered him for 20 minutes. He was upset that she was hired in the first as she didn’t meet our standards… we just had to let her go. She is hanging out outside the building waiting for a ride and no one wants to leave...

Hahaha I wonder what that person was thinking! You would have spent that two-week period training them just for them to leave once they know how to do the job. Were they just wanting to get paid for two weeks? Did they put the two weeks notice when they first arrived or where they were there for a few hours and then decided to put the notice in, like they decided the job was not for them?

Had to give someone a final warning on day 1 and termed a few days later.

Omg. She's really out of her mind. I never encountered something like this in the past. But this one's a crazy experience, for sure.

Man she sounds like a total nutcase. Glad you got rid of her easily. Whoever hired her needs to reevaluate themselves.

Good golly! She's so unprofessional like who ever does that? I had to give someone a final warning 3 days after getting hired.

I’m not from an English speaking country but I am watching a tv show and businessmen walk into a room and instead of greeting eachother, everyone says each person’s first name in lieu of hi, however in my experience working in the states, I haven’t seen anyone do this, it’s always hi or good afternoon or some other greeting first THEN they say their first name. is it also appropriate to omit the greeting?

What should I reasonably expect from a junior?

I manage a junior developer that's been with the company for about 18 months. I end up providing them of TON of support. I need to give them extremely detailed instructions or they fail. For bugs, I need to point them to a specific function that's causing the bug. For new features, I'm basically writing their method signatures and defining their test cases.

I've tried asking them to do more on their own, but when I do, they fail spectacularly.

What should I expect from my manager? I've stuck it out for a year now and all I'm ever told is to not make mistakes. Manager stated explicitly that he does not want to review or test my work. Any attempts at discussion of why I made a mistake are dismissed by him as me making excuses. I never get any positive feedback. I somehow manager to make it a few months without making any errors but I missed a small detail in a large project and my 1on1 went terribly because of it. Is this common?

The hostility on my team is rough. We have a yeller. I walked by her room the other day. She was screaming across the room at a student, "you have to be kind to get kindness." Seriously, those were her words in a loud, berating, angry tone. Our admin has asked that we not report these. We are to talk to the teacher. She has yelled at me and other adults. Admin has to know she treats the kids this way too. One teacher has to work with her door closed to not hear the yelling all day.

Everyone has some aspect of privilege depending upon the context. Privilege means the absence of obstacles/barriers, not necessarily the presence of perks. I have a direct report who is smart, passionate about her job and can be really innovative. However she carries this enormous weight of responsibility, for needing to do everything, do it right, make sure it's perfect, not trusting colleagues to help. It creates dread and panic and overwhelming workload and a terrible attitude for her and I am speaking with her this week to start to shift her mindset. Any tips in navigating how to let go of this heavy idea of "responsibility"?

Our company is considering offering 401K employer match. We are about 200 employees venture backed company. We have about 60% participation mostly the non HCEs and only some key employees contribute.
