It’s creepy how much this feels like I wrote this. I hustled too hard and now I miss writing. I miss concepting without having to think through layers of politics and every individual clients’ personalities. I miss not knowing how pathetically under-qualified leadership is and what a mess The Table actually is.
I’ve considered requesting a demotion to being a CW (not even senior). And I’m also considering braving the freelance world for the sake of my mental health.
I don’t have any advice for you because I AM you haha but I am closely following this thread now.
Same here, but I’m a designer. I can barely manage my damn self some days, lol. I love the teaching/mentoring aspect of having direct reports, but the performance reviews, general bureaucratic nonsense, and day-to-day oversight does not appeal to me in the slightest. The problem is that I need to advance in order to increase my salary, which I now have to do just to survive in this economy. I would otherwise happily stay at this level if the pay were enough to sustain myself and my family. But it’s just not enough anymore.
Can’t speak to this personally but I know a handful of CDs who are mainly working CDs. They’re given projects, or clients where they do the work themselves.
I’d also suggest maybe seeing if you can split your duties between overseeing and working.
ADs and CDs at my agency all do their own work!
TBH I am in the opposite boat. I love inspiring teams and protecting the work. Cultivating talent and being strategic. Seeing the big picture on a brand. I’m a great manager and I do enjoy it! Unfortunately the only way to get promoted to higher management positions is by making work lmao. No wonder there are so many bad managers at the top who wish they weren’t managing. Give me your job. I’ll do it.
dude you can die on this hill if you want lol
Same boat but on the art side. I didn’t get into this job to manage, I got into it because I love designing. Long story short I talked to a recruitment business owner about this same question, and he said it’s extremely hard to go backwards, as employers see it as some kind of weakness, like you couldn’t hack it on the front lines, and now you want to relieve the pressure with a less demanding role. It’s so wrong and misguided, but ultimately employees don’t care that we want to go back to writing or art. They just go with the direction you’ve been going on your resume and they want people pushing forward not backwards.
Have you considered moving to a smaller shop? Majority of CDs at smaller agencies still actively concept. And the smaller teams keeps the inspiration/overseeing aspect of the job more manageable.
This is great insight, thank you!
Hey, souls! I need a copywriting gig and that of the Screenplay. Thanks
As long as you’re clear on why you want to go back, it shouldn’t be a problem. However, you will likely make less because the role changed and your ceiling won’t rise much.
