Has anyone left the IT industry to do something completely different? I’m in my early 50s and about done with IT after over 30 years. I’d like to find something different and less stressful and wondering if others had made significant career changes after so long in one industry.

What about shifting gears in IT? I assume you were on the operations side? If so, why not get into software development? If you were already a dev, why not do something more like data analytics? I think shifting gears into another position rather then completely leaving the field is much easier and an easier sell to employers.

Well if you have management experience, sounds like to me you should stay in management but in a different industry. But management is a stressful job regardless of field. In my opinion, programming is minimally stressful (if you’re good at it). Even if I have a large workload, I’m never really stressed out. But again, you don’t want to program anymore (or “engineer” as you put it) then again I think data analytics is much less stressful, and you could easily land a gig with your experience. I know people in similar boots as you, and they often do two things. Shift gears into another position in IT or start their own freelance business given their experience and knowledge. Anything besides that would be much harder and you’d be doing a pretty tough career switch making much less money I’d assume. But I figure based on the nature of this question, money isn’t your priority here. Good luck

Seems like an increasingly common sentiment these days. So many people who spent their careers in tech and IT are done with it all and want to take a role that doesnt involve staring at screens all day

Looking for some advice on a career change. I work in a technical role and have well-developed soft skills. I want to transition to UX (w/ focus on accessibility). There are a lot of UX educational programs out there, some very new, e.g. Dribbble, and costs are all over the place - General Assembly is $15k (and full-time), CareerFoundry almost $8k, and then many others at a fraction of the price. Reviews also vary wildly. Are these more expensive programs worth the huge increase in cost?

VC / PE / MMB comp and trajectory comparisons? Is it better to stay in MMB until later in your career then switch to PE/VC or better to make the move earlier.
