To be honest, a lot of things were out of my comfort zone when I first started. It wasn’t so much anybody pushing me into it, just myself having to do things. Think it really depends on the context of what you are being pushed to do, if it is something that will have long term benefits, great, but it still should be up to you.
I agree that I should have some say in if I want to do it. I guess it's just more about it being decided for me.

Anything new does that for me. I did find a love of event planning from it though. One exec did try to make me CoS/business development lead, but that was pushing too far. I probably could have done it but I knew it would be a lot of stress. Im happy where I'm at career wise and couldn't see a career progression I wanted to pursue from there, but I could with the EA path to hopefully office manager.
Being pushed out of your comfort zone could mean any number of things. I've been encouraged to do things I was unfamiliar with, and I've picked up some knowledge and skills as a result, so that's a good version of it. But if you're being asked to do things that are well beyond what's in your job description, then it could be seen as exploitation, or, as you say, cheap labor.
I guess it truly could be either of those scenarios
