Because counseling jobs are so difficult to find I always tell my interns that it helps to get involved in a school. I subbed and coached dance when I was interning so the staff knew who I was. Typically schools don’t pick internal candidates unless they know who you are or you have a great resume. At least that’s how it is in Illinois.

Network! Make sure that people k ow your name and your work ethic. It will happen, but you have to be patient.

Find what you have that make you different and more appealable than others. Sale that. Markets is competitive and now there is more candidates that the demand.
Network. Know what your printer piece needs. Know peopled that give you tips from the inside... And pull you in.

Bring a portfolio! Classroom lessons, small group lessons, parent education, etc. - they may not look at it but if they do it can you earn you big points! Use something easy like Canva to create clean, simple, and easy to read portfolio pages. Be sure to use buzz words like ‘stakeholders’, ‘collaboration’, and ‘flexibility’. Know the school or districts mission statement and culture so you can speak to why you feel it would be a good fit and the values that you align with in their system. I was told that you MUST have a letter of rec, and a GOOD one, from at least one principal. Volunteer in the schools or shadow someone and make a name for yourself, get to know the admin, and don’t be shy about asking for a letter of rec if you feel you’ve showcased enough skill for them to write a great letter. Know the sub populations of the student bodies at the schools you are applying to and the data/research/best practice aligned with intervention strategies. Be knowledgeable AND okay with not having an “answer” but deferring to “I would work from a perspective of research-based intervention and collaboration with stakeholder groups so we can create the most efficacious intervention plan for this challenge.” Last but not least, ask good questions at the end. “How would you describe the culture of this school?” “What are your hopes for the future of the counseling program?” Etc. Remember, you are also interviewing them and you can learn a lot from their responses!

I'm currently working as an electrical designer in the MEP industry. I really don't like it and I'm working towards a career change which I'm actively applying for and getting certified etc. However, it's been a slow process and I'm currently underpaid where I am so would it be wise to make a lateral move to another MEP firm simply because they offer me more money while I still look for a different job separate from this field? Or just tough it out?

Feeling like I’ve been “bait-and-switched”…

I’ve been interviewing at an agency with the intention of filling a Director role. Recruitment reached out soon after my last meet-and-greet interview (about 6 to 7 people total) to tell me the team thinks I would be best suited for an Associate Director role with a fast follow of a Director promotion.

Recruitment can’t tell me what feedback is creating this gap but also won’t stop mentioning the positive praise and feedback the team had for me.

What’s the best way to turn down a 2nd interview? During the 1st interview, I learned that the compensation for the role is not within the range that I am looking for and requires 400 more billable hours a year than what I bill now. I’d basically be laterally for my current salary just to bill 400 more hours. I also wasn’t aware that the local office was strictly ID. Firm website advertises lots of practice areas. Any advice? TIA!

Based on the Gross salary offered I have calculated the in hand salary per month would be around 152000 considering 150000 in 80C, 50000 in NPS and 200000 deductions due to home loan interest. Total tax liability is around 400000. Any other options do I have to save tax further (other than HRA, LTA)? Thanks in advance.
