Generally when organizations do crappy things, people leave.

Agreed. One thinking I have learned is that employees perceive the benefits available through the company as an extension of culture. When all they see is cost control for the company’s bottom line, all those Fun Friday activities fall short of building morale.

Years ago, we eliminated company match at the same time as a Reduction in Force (RIF). Over the next 6 months, leadership was surprised to see voluntary terminations increase. They banked on people staying out of loyalty.
Once a prominent figure left and voted the company match as the final straw that got them to begin a job search, Leadership quickly decided to put the match back in.
I think that so many people are just hanging on by a thread nowadays, when there is any change it becomes a reason and people bail.
Could be an intentional move to increase voluntary resignations.
