Have you thought about going to a smaller firm and having an AWA (alternative work arrangement)? They would very much value your big four experience and having your exams passed. You would also be able to have your work life balance and still have all the good parts of public accounting. Having a firm 40 hours shouldn’t make you take too much of a base salary hit or be a deal breaker at a smaller firm.
Thanks for the reply . I did reach out to few local firms here .. they were all hesitant with the AWA. They were all looking for a full time associate at that time . So I started as a staff account for the time being . Hopefully I will find something better soon .
Why return to public? Plenty of private companies that would satisfy the hours
Maybe a flex schedule if you must return to public accounting? I also heard Deloitte has a program specifically for parents who have been out of the workforce and want to return.
I’m not sure we still have that program but I came back in tax as a senior manager on a fwa. It works well as long as you monitor your schedule and say no to extra projects.
PwC has Flexible Talent Network, which allows to work during busy season. You should check it out.
Industry or gov job?
Work for a short period full time demonstrating your worth and then ask if flextime is possible. If they value you enough, and you have the right role you both can make it work.
Agree with PwC2. Check out the Flexible Talent Network.
You might also look for jobs in financial reporting, internal audit that don’t work 90 hours a week. Yes there’s busier weeks but won’t be as consistent as public.
I’m on an AWA and my firm encourages them! Where are you located OP?
Upstate New York.
I would go with Government jobs
You can get your hours in industry working for a CPA. Don’t go public. Time with your kids is to precious and fun.
Thanks for all your comments .
Definitely try to go to an accounting firm flex time! My firm is looking for talent nationwide and I'm a working mom on a flex schedule who would live to bond with more ladies :) what are your soft skills that you worked on while out of the work force? Have you passed any cpa exams? And how are you brushing up on your accounting knowledge? These are all important things to think about that will strengthen your interviews. I personally know a mom who switched careers to accounting and joined my firm, and is going on a flex situation after being here about a year, and another mom who decided to pursue accounting later in life now that her kids are grown. Worth looking into!
