Hello bosses! This is my first post and I am looking to improve my ‘assertiveness’ and ‘executive presence’, to gain more respect in a department that’s more male heavy. What has worked well for you in the past? And now?

Great questions! I am more introverted by nature, so I won’t be the loudest in the room.

For me it’s buddying up with everyone by building relationships 1:1 on the side. So the day of the meeting in front of 12 dudes, I actually have each one of them wrapped around my finger so I can move my agenda along.

In my experience working there, it wasn’t the men who had a hard time accepting women or being respectful of roles. It was the women who would would smile to your face and stab you in the back which would cause the men not to trust you based on what they had heard. I would say build a strong team and keep a close eye on misunderstandings within it. I had been warned but I didn’t take it seriously and I regret it to this day. I loved my job, loved the company. It was the snakes in the grass that were my demise.

Well you didn’t get there magically so always remind yourself that you belong there just as much as they do. Female uppers do really well by being eloquent in every way. That’s the only trait that needs polishing.

Building out a new function at my company, top 15 bank in the US, and scheduled a 90 minute meeting last week for today. Does anyone have any advice on how to deal with discrimination as an Asian in the workplace? In my company it seems like it’s a white boys club where and they just promote white ppl because they’re white. And then they have a lower bar for promotions for minorities (traditional minorities likes Hispanics and African Americans). Meanwhile they make Asians do all the work. I am not generalizing that this is how it is everywhere but it definitely is that way in my workplace. Any advice?

Every time I speak to my director (at least twice a week), he works in how he is getting older into the conversation(humorously). For instance, he forgot something non-work related, said “sign of old age”. He recently told a story, said, this is how old people talk. He likes to come across as a grandfatherly figure, but I’m not sure what to say in these encounters. It is always an innocent, non work related context. Have you guys experienced this ? What is an appropriate response ?

How does one go about resignation in the remote setting?

Should i email my boss then follow up with a call? Or the other way around?

The "confrontation" is really difficult for me lol. I actually like my current boss and she's been helpful and made me feel like she looks out for me too. But the new opportunity is too good to pass up on (huge increase to pay. No concerns on the team since ive worked with those people in the past in a different company)

1) Hypothetically if you were looking to sabotage a colleague, can you code an excel document to throw off their numbers or calculations, (if you send them that document and they download it for use)?

Any advice for presenting somebody else’s work? I’ve been stretched thin on different projects but have to present in place of some of on vacation with little time to prepare.

What can a junior associate do about a mid-level that constantly asks questions about things they were cc’d on, sends dozens of piecemeal emails and is generally just super high strung and needs everything right away?? No other mid-levels I’ve worked with act this way and this individual I’m working with is driving me insane and I’ve spent countless hours attaching emails and saying “as explained in the attached email…”

So my VP at my previous company felt bad and refused to speak to me or attend my farewell after my resignation. His reason was that I somehow betrayed his trust as he had promoted me just last year (after keeping the position open for 4 months and letting me take additional work load after the previous SM left!). Does this make any sense? I mean where does this sense of entitlement or ownership over the employees come from? No wonder the company in question is kind of facing a literal exodus!
