Managing upwards is about making clear to your manager what you're working on.
A good approach is to structure your 121s. I really like this structure with my team 👇🏻
• wins from the last week/month (depending on frequency of meetings) – so you're highlighting all the good stuff you've achieved, keep this record and use it progress reviews
• priorities for the next week/month
• I need your support with... – shows you're not afraid to ask for help and you know clearly what you need support with
• feedback from manager – aim to get feedback on at least one thing you've done
Suggest this to your manager and ask for feedback. Implement it, and tweak it as needed.
And related to this, the golden rule of getting promoted is to make your manager's life easier. So you can always end the meeting with "What can I do to help you?"
Be realistic, and don't overburden yourself. Prioritise and delegate. Ask for help before it becomes a problem. Go to your manager with solutions, not just problems and they can help you refine those solutions (these can be options that you need to discuss with them).
Good luck!
Use chat gpt to help you with your emails. Managing up is a matter of knowing what you want and need from your supervisors. Be direct, reasonable and thoughtful when managing up!
Regarding the emails, don’t add too much “fluff” to keep them sort and to the point - be direct (with a friendly tone), don’t write long paragraphs, instead try to use bullet points whenever possible, and use applicable attachments (flyers etc.) and reference them in the body. Also, make sure your subject line implies the topic of the email and pertinent info. such as client name and account number.
Whenever I think my question might be perceived as silly, I’ll say something like”Excuse my ignorance but can you help me understand XYZ.”
Hope this helps!
Short and to the point for the win! Bullets for the gold medal. With a ~hundred emails hitting the inbox over a day or two verbose is a huge irritant.
Also don’t populate the “send to” field until you’ve proofread your message and added all necessary attachments. Nothing worse than sending a draft.
Options to say you have a Q without minimising yourself:
"I have a question."
"I'd like to ask a question."
It's hard to kick this sort of habit, but you can keep your language simple and sound more confident. The same goes for using "just" – "I just wanted to follow up...", "I just thought about...". Simply remove the word "just"
I always liked Hemingwayapp.com to help with passive voice on my email. Helped me be more direct over the years.
If you can put a grammar check on your email try that! It really helps. also always start with a topic sentence and end with an action and deadline
ChatGPT is a good source for writing emails. Try to google the question before you ask to see if you can find the answer. If you can't find it then ask your question and become confident in yourself
I always like to ask questions by beginning with "To clarify, [question]?" or "For clarification, [question]?". That way managers / supervisors understand how you're perceiving the situation and can confirm or clarify your understanding of the situation/question at hand. I feel like it shows a little bit more proactivity than simply noting you have a question you need to ask (and also helps condense the email!).
When asking a question, try to anticipate what questions the recipient may have and provide as much information as possible to answer those questions. This can help to prevent unnecessary back-and-forth.
Thank you everyone !!! So happy I asked in this forum ☺️
Thank you so much I’m trying man 😭 I just wanna be good at my job
That's an interesting one, I just usually say something like 'I'd like to ask a question' - that's nice enough! I do get tired of quick q as well, but I'm guilty as charged
Thanks for the advice
