Here's the leaked EY internal email with the real reasons why they took away everyone's PTO

Love how they call people "entitled." It's so awful that people want access to the benefit outlined in their contract.

likefunnysmart

So EY told everyone there was a new policy that let then roll over more days? If they didn't want to set up an expectation, why change the policy?

Eh I feel like students are naive about unlimited vacation. I definitely didn’t understand what it really was until I was in the workforce.

You know I’ve been afraid of sending bad emails in my field but now I know nothing I do will top this. 😎

The ultimate reply all wouldn’t even touch this. You are safe for life now.

What’s too much vacation in an unlimited vacation policy?

likesmart

K5 if we switched that would be my concern. At PwC we can accrue up to 176 hours. Some years I take 100 hours some years I take 250 hours it just depends on how things play out.

Sometimes I take long weekends by working longer hours during the week and sometimes I use vacation hours to fill the week. This policy would encourage more flex time and saving the vacation code for a week or 2 off at a time.

This is the partners plan

Can some state please pass a law already that says any firms with unlimited vacation policy can’t terminate employees for abusing it because it’s means exactly that - unlimited pto.

likesmartfunny

How are they handling maternity/paternity leave as a result of this? Other firms who have switched have had gender discrimination complaints. Mom has to take short term disability or FMLA, Dad gets to take unlimited PTO.

Assurance Manager 1. This was in 2016. Long story short, I don’t remember exactly haha. I got paid family leave from EY, and then I tacked on 4 weeks of PTO, and I think I may have even taken a week or two of unpaid leave because I moved from the East Coast to the West Coast in the middle of it. Working like I did that busy season (January through June, FSO asset management practice, senior manager) is not recommended. I could have had real health problems. I got lucky. I think that someone said there was an FAQ that you could tack on 3 weeks. Hopefully that is true, because even though the firm has a pretty decent policy, compared to many, there is still pushback from some. There are also some very helpful sponsors. Mine was a senior female partner in San Francisco who has 3 kids. I never would have made it without her.

EY employees, stop your entitlement mentality!😂

likefunny

Did EY post some sort of apology as a follow-up? This is insane. I would think there would be huge push back to get rid of this with the leak of the real reasons and absolute disdain for employees in that email

like

Hardly.

What do you mean it was leaked?

likehelpful

Definitely didn't intend for us to see it lol. This leak really makes me upset

likesmartfunny

Now everyone know what the firm is intended for.

Genuinely curious, what did they mean by eliminating entitlement mentality? From their perspective, in all seriousness, how does removing people’s accrued PTO eliminate any sense of entitlement?

like

When you have a set number of days, you feel entitled to take them because they give you a # to aim for. With no # to aim for, you can't be entitled. IMO this is more the angle I saw vs the carryover entitlement, a lot of companies already have no carryover or caps - i can live with that.

The only thing about this thread that makes me want to leave is that i work with so many idiots who thought this was a good will gesture Lmaooo

like

Totally agree, so many people forwarded that email to me thinking was a great thing. I my comments about being a very bad thing were taken as if I was a negative Nancy... Untill the internal email with the actual reason was leaked. I read a study a while ago... Apparently american companies prefer to hire people with average IQ, since they are much easier to manipulate. This makes me doubt about the fact that I am a smart person and makes me think that EY fully implements this policy, but probably we won't ever know unless another email about hiring semi-idiots is leaked

God unlimited PTO is such a HUGE scam!!!! Thank you for posting this and revealing it!

like

This is just like those “unlimited” data plans except here pwc will just throttle your salary when you exceeds certain limits.

I am disappointed but not surprised that this leaked. Assuming this came from a Partner or Director its sort of a betrayal of confidence. We have/had the same problems in our shop.

GT has been doing this for awhile as I recall. I wonder how it is working out over there.

I never could use the PTO provided (36 days) so this policy wouldn't mean much personally.

I’ll still use my 15-20 days as my current rank had been.

It was only “leaked” when someone posted the screenshot on here. The info was available (unintentionally) for any employee to view/download.

How much is “not taking enough vacation” and how much is “taking too much vacation?

like

Anything less than unlimited is not enough.

It’s such BS. I’ve been saving up my PTO to take 3 weeks off for my wedding and honeymoon in January. And now I have over 3 weeks of PTO i wont be able to use by EOY. I’m so over this place

like

PTO is deferred compensation. That’s what it is. Compensation likely outlined in their employment agreement. It’s not something they “squirreled” away. It’s part of their compensation, for which they have been slaving away.

So I had 3 deals scheduled to either close end of May or mid June which were all pushed to end of June/beginning of July. Which is when I have my first vacation planned for over a year (I take 0 time off). My whole family is flying up and we’re renting a cabin near me. What do I do? I’m running one of the deals, semi running the other one and not doing much leading on the other one. Note: I was supposed to not be running any of these. Do I find a back up first or tell the partners first?

EY 🐠 - potentially starting with the firm soon, and my partner is due to have our first in April. Given the 1 year service requirement for leave, would I have the option to take PTO during birth and use parental leave after my 1 year of service? Appreciate any guidance here

Banks have been expanding parental leave policies with some offering the same amount of time to both primary and secondary parents. Do you think your company provides sufficient time off? Most importantly, would you be willing to take the full amount of time - without fearing repercussions?

Just had a very uncomfortable conversation with a partner. I have some time off booked to go to my brother’s wedding (I’m the best man). We were chatting and I mentioned that my brother’s future husband is so nice and really a great guy, and we already consider him a member of our family. Partner’s tone immediately shifts and as we’re ending the call he says, “Okay, enjoy the time with your family at the civil ceremony.” Like… girl you live in California, you cannot be this backward.

Guys, need one quick suggestion -

28th Jan(after 2 days) is my joining date in one of the organisation.. meanwhile I get a call from one of captive company for final managerial discussion scheduled for today itself.
I doubt they can release offer in just 2 days if all good, having said that tomorrow is holiday.
Ques- should I tell after 2 days I have to join one of organization. Or can I tell, still I am with current organisation and serving np, probably 60 days left and wait for their offer..

Luggage delay claim question

I used Chase explorer to buy tickets for my vacation and luggages were delayed for a month. Per chase term I am entitled $100 a day for 3 days. But the claim agency chase used has been asking for airlines response, which has not came (2month+ now). I am concerned insurance will use this as an excuse to never compensate. Is there a good way to handle this situation?
TIA

I have an offer for a company abroad. Originally they wanted me to fly out and start the day after Thanksgiving (not celebrated in their country), but because of the holidays I suggested starting in either December or January with the ability to take some holiday days in December to fly back home for Christmas. They then proposed starting out remotely “as soon as possible” in the US as a contractor and then moving abroad to start full time abroad. (Cont)
