Hey folks. Need some advice for my younger brother. He’s interested in pursuing a career in Supply Chain in the Pharmaceutical Industry. He’s torn between two specializations Manufacturing (Quality Assurance) vs. Strategic Sourcing/Procurement. Which of those two do you believe has the better growth prospects and is good for a young adult starting out his career to pursue. T.I.A!

Dont specialize. Spend time in Supply Chain, Operations, Manufactuturing, Logistics, Planning, etc.

I would do manufacturing - procurement gets boring real quick and is becoming automated.

like

Agree with broad skill set. Procurement and quality are both sort of dead end gigs. Procurement being the better of the two. Quality is where careers go to die. I’m sure there are anecdotal success stories there but as someone who has worked extensively in supply chain and now in a leadership role, this is my advice.

Engineers who can’t do, work in quality.

likehelpful

What was your title before you entered leadership? I’m noticing that a lot of great supply chain people get to the head of supply chain and then get stuck there forever

like

procurement; quality is a dead end career path

like

Strat Sourcing- with the new emphasis on sustainability there is tons of opportunities

like

What is the internal mobility like at these opportunities? Assuming it’s decent, I’d opt for Manufacturing… QA isn’t a good long term career path, per D1s point, but Manufacturing is a better org to be a part of than Procurement, especially in pharma

like

In my opinion, within pharma specifically, manufacturing is inherently more complex, hence a better learning opportunity. Highly scrutinized, constant balancing between internal vs outsourced production, and the ability to work across multiple product lines (therapeutic areas)

helpful

Procurement is becoming more important and with plenty of CEOs being former procurement guys (Tim Cook) but IMO manufacturing as it allows you to be involved up and downstream easier.

like

Easily procurement between the two, as long as you’re in an org where they value their procurement teams (J&J in pharma, apple in tech, etc)

like

Procurement

Don’t forget P2P / S2P is (re) emerging enabled by tech base where the most $$$$ are paid .

Personally P2P is really boring, feels like I am an accountant

Resume/LinkedIn question:

I am a senior student graduating in a couple of months. I am going to join Google this fall as a SWE. My previous work experience includes an internship at Google, and a summer spent working on open source (PostgreSQL) during Google Summer of Code. In addition to a lot of college coursework projects (CE major). Most of these projects are worth mentioning and they cover a diverse range of fields.

At what point should I drop coursework projects from my Resume/LinkedIn?
