Go to medical school. Do something meaningful. Consulting is not it.
Do it! If you’re generally young and you won’t be taking on any debt, what a great opportunity. Whether you decide to go into practice or not, so many doors will be opened.
The only question you need to answer for yourself is whether you want to be a physician or not. It’s not a profession to tread lightly into but can be immensely rewarding (and frustrating in a different way).
I wouldn’t consider the current economic outlook here. You’re talking about 7-10 years of intensive learning and training as EM1 stated.
Structurally, physicians will always have their place in society but their practice is increasingly corporatized, with encroachment from mid levels for less complex/more routine duties.
If not medical school - you could utilize your expertise in multiple roles on the business side of healthcare / pharma.
I’d actually like to practice to some degree but ideally come back to the biz side and work in HC VC/PE (already in VC @ a seed fund). Unfortunately it’s rare to progress through the ranks w/o an MD/PhD..
Are you open to the idea of 7+ years of no/low income before earning high pay? Do you want to switch into a career in medicine in the long term? Or do you enjoy the “business” part of it (eg strat, BD)?
Former surgical resident here. More than happy to chat offline
If you do it, it has to be for the love of patients. If you aren’t passionate about that aspect, then don’t do it. It is emotionally and mentally exhausting. And at times unforgiving.
It is a gift and a burden to carry that mantle, and certainly not to be entered lightly. Good luck with whatever path you choose.
@SC1 wouldn’t consider consulting, but of course plenty of opps to pursue strat roles (BD, BizOps, etc) at various HC startups + potential to go to a more legit financial institution (VC/PE)
I’m considering a similar career path; getting MD to transition from consulting into VC. I‘d love to chat about your experiences/rationale if you’re willing to talk privately.
Sure thing.
