Hi all! First just want to say thank you to all for this community.

I’m a science PhD student at a target school. Have an offer from MBB to start in 1-2 years as a generalist consultant. Absolutely no business/consulting experience. I chose an office close to the mountains for a change in location/life. Now I’m learning that some offices are lot more “prestigious” than others. Was it a bad career move to not pick NYC/SFO/BOS? Or is quality of problems more or less uniform nationally?

I think you'll be fine.
Even if there is a difference, it'll be 100 vs 98 and not 80-20.
Probably good for you to start out slow and not be amongst the most cutthroat of the group.

Also was just a bit frustrated of living on the coast on a PhD salary. Would have been ok working in these cities, but was hoping for a change of pace in life. But of course, don’t want it to come at the expense of beginning a career. Thank you for the insight.

Generally uniform; those locations are FOMO driven and have higher CoL anyways

Thanks!

Not sure which one of MBB you are going. We have very different staffing models — Bain is known for local staffing and you tend to work with the same people repeatedly, whereas McK could staff you anywhere. If M is the one you will be joining, I think it is actually a pretty good idea to not live in high cost of living area — you probably will be on the road most of them anyways.

Welcome! Yes my NY colleagues are traveling less and doing a lot more financial service projects for sure. Have not worked with too many people from SFO so I cannot confirm but I would assume the same.

People wise — I have been working with more people from other offices than my home offices, so I don’t think your home office location matters that much — it’s all about staffing, which PD will help you especially in the beginning.

Most studies I have been on are in a hybrid model now. Travel commitment is something that has become more flexible over time!
