All I can say is that I’m a copywriter and I still need you. I love great design but hate dealing with graphic designers

How come you don’t like dealing with designers?

It’s unfortunate that a lot of places don’t understand the value of what we do as art directors and think they can just replace us with designers and have the copywriters do all the concepting and direction

When you’re counting the beans and can get the same output in the client’s paying eyes by using a CW and a designer, vs using an AD, a CW and a designer, you can see where this leads.

I mad the switch at 35 to UX/UI. Working on a dedicated product now. Personally I love it. Everyday I feel like I’m building something people use, a tool, like a kid with a basket of legos. I get constant feedback, make adjustments, make the product better. While I liked making ads, it always felt unrewarding...like an assembly line. One ad out the door, next one to do. Like I was throwing my efforts into a black hole. I always want feedback on the results but it was hard to get.

There are just new channels and mediums. Right now, a lot of people/agencies think the big creative idea is irrelevant in the new media landscape but they’re wrong.

I’ve had these thoughts for a couple of years now, since it’s getting rarer and rarer for someone to see the value in an AD. You’ve just gotta widen your skill set and be more flexible with the work you do, as it’s needed. That said, the shift towards business creativity over advertisement creativity that’s happening because of consultancies etc is great, so not all is lost.
