Hello people, how common is a Amazon to PWC move ?
I’m interviewing for a Senior Associate role and TC seems to be more competitive than role in L5.
TC $114k- Base AMZ- $73k +$38kstocks ( vesting 17k$ due next year)
TC $135k Base PWC -$81$ + Bonuses ( 50k$)
Looking for managerial skills which the PWC role avails, and L6 promo doesn’t seem to be happening soon in current role. I’m also mentally stretched. I hear WLB in PWC is just as busy but can anyone confirm if this move makes any sense. Google Amazon

You didn’t waste anything. You pursued what you wanted. You taught for 15 years. Now you want to pivot. Without knowing more context I say go for it.
You would be surprised at how many people work outside of the degrees they have. it is all about finding what makes you happy and covers the bills. If your photo business is just as lucrative as teaching, imagine what you could do if you put 100% of yourself into it. the trick is to not turn what you love into something you end up not enjoying. I spent years going to school for art and design. for a few years after I had nointerest in painting or art. For me I have come back to loving it, but know that I want to keep it as "my escape" and not turn it into a mandatory requirement of "work". Each person is different and ultimately has to make that decision. you can always go for it, and still get onto sub list to keep yourself fresh and certified. that is something my wife has done. She has never regretted her decision.
The owner of my gym has a PhD in chemistry. Not a waste because that’s how he met his wife!
Do it. You learned great things that enabled you to do something that worked for you for a long time. Now it doesn’t work for you. The fortunate thing is that you have an avocation that you can turn into a vocation. Not everyone has that luxury. Seize this opportunity.
Not a waste at all!! You did what's was right in the moment. You can't hold your self to a higher standard than that!!
If you did it year one into teaching I’d understand. You’ve mastered your trade in education and can always go back. Chances are your full-time photography could be just as successful if not limitless. I say go for in and try to be involved in education part time now
- Save 6 to 9 months of your expenses.
- ask about taking a Sabbatical for a year.
This may give you some clarity. My wife has been a small business owner for about 11 years (wedding business) and she realized that what she loved about her business was the extra income when she was still working in non profit, she is planning to go back to work so she has the extra income on the wedding business.
Summary: the reason your photography business seems like a lot is because is currently all disposable income, might be different when is your only source of income. Also a teaching job usually has a lot of fringe benefits.
Take a sabbatical after having enough on a saving account.
Follow your passion, take photos. We are designed to progress as we grow up and if you can match your income doing something you enjoy you’ve lost nothing. Most people can’t find that one thing they want to do and the rest don’t have the guts to make the change. Be bold and enjoy your life!
Think about why you did what you did in the first place. Probably because you thought it would help you enjoy life more at some point right? That's the goal, it doesn't matter how you get there. The only thing you owe your past self is to seize opportunities that make you a happier person. Your education and experience can still serve you and will be there if you ever need to draw from it again.
Definitely not a waste! You learned a lot over that time of your education & teaching - use some of the lessons to help fuel your photography business. No time here is wasted just because you took the path you did. We all find out at some time that we want to pursue our passions and that our current path isn’t what we want for forever. Go after that photography business and grow it to become double your current salary - it’s very doable and there’s no better feeling that working for yourself I’m sure. Good luck!
The key words: “supposed to.” Do what makes you come alive. Life is too short to allow the expectations of others/society dictate what you do.
Going “by the book” career wise rarely results in extraordinary results. The one thing I’d consider (my mom is also a teacher in a similar situation) is retirement. Typically teachers need to stick around for 20 years or more to get full retirement-depending on your school system and your personal savings situation it might be worth it to stay a little longer depending on your age. My mom is 3 years away from full retirement benefits (25 years) She’s also burned out and done-but has no other retirement options except her school pension plan. Even bailing at year 24 yields a big drop in benefit. It’s awful.
And maybe host/lead photography classes! I’ve always wanted to take one. Maybe it would be cool/fulfilling to offer monthly workshops or local tour projects
Do what makes you happy. Life is too short to not do what you love. I’m also considering leaving teaching for something else too.
Ever consider adult learning? And entering Instructional Design? Can be lucrative for right person especially if you can do digital learning
DO IT
You also need to feed your soul. It’s great that you have those degrees and put in all that work but I know so many people who work in fields not at all related to their degrees. Go feed your soul.
You only get this one life! Do what you love!
That's easy for me to say. :)
