You're a more dedicated teacher than I am, to your detriment from the sound of it. Please put the laptop away and sleep. The work can wait.
Hi Katy
Premade substitute packets that rely heavily on worksheets are your best friend. Because then you could just email the sub and tell her what file to go to.
Tell them* Weird that you assumed the sub would automatically be a woman.
To misquote Vader to myself: "If only you knew the power of ChatGPT." I feel your agony. Did it for 25 years. Not only do we grade too many papers, we are also expected to write up award-winning lessons when we are sick. Seriously, the dark side of A.I. (if I had it back then) would "forever dominate my destiny." I send all my sympathies to you.
The best advice I have is to make a lesson in advance of any need for an absence. Pick something that either has them learn a self-contained topic and practice it (using a video or interactive tool or guided notes), or something that will give them a chance to practice some things that they should already know but need work on. Doing this in advance gives you a chance to put in the time and effort to thoughtfully plan it in a way that students will be accountable and you will get useful feedback when you are NOT desperately in need of rest... you can go ahead and make the necessary copies and instructions and have it stored in a set location so that, in case of emergency, all you have to do is tell someone where to find it.
I would revisit it occasionally to update it to whatever is most relevant and helpful.
I work at a residential special needs school and we have to plan for days we are not there... even when sick... one of my coworkers sent plans from the hospital!
That's sad. No one should be working from a hospital bed. Wow.
Sub tub. I have a black binder that can keep classes busy. For weeks if need be.
Have generic sub plans for each quarter ready to go. You should be resting. Capitalism is horrible and making you feel like you’re not allowed to rest or “punished for being human.” So many schools don’t even want teachers calling out sick, which disgusts me because that means they don’t put everyone’s health and safety first. Besides the fact that they should want people to rest and recover, they should also care about spreading the illness to everyone else. Stay home all the days you’re contagious. Knock out the sub plans now if you need to, but you literally cannot heal well or quickly without ample rest. I hope you feel better soon
Edit: I see this is from a week ago. Hope you were able to rest up and recover and sort out the sub plan situation easily. You feeling better now?
I have been a science teacher for 20 years and a high school assistant principal for 5. I have been a substitute teacher for 4 years. The best you can do for me is give them a lesson from their laptop that has corresponding packets like they already been working on in class. Not hard to do. Administration wants students kept in the room, aquiet class and the students not bouncing off the wall.
