Wow. That was much longer than I anticipated. I am deliriously tired (just finished a fucking deck) and started rambling. 😂
They stop putting you on new projects and start asking you to wrap up your assignment. Things start being taken off your plate.
Are you getting laid off or are you getting fired? There's definitely a difference between the two.
Being laid off (loss of a client, lack of new business, etc.) is par for the course in this industry and not something that is typically held against people. Sometimes there is no open position to be moved to or sometimes the best/most expensive people need to be laid off for the business to remain above water. If you're laid off you get unemployment payments (assuming you file for it).
Being fired is when a company parts ways with you while still needing to fill your position (poor work performance, not the right fit for the team/role, doing something objectively offensive or illegal, etc.). If you're fired, the company can fight you getting unemployment, though they typically won't. By law, a former employer cannot say why you were fired, just the dates of your employment and I *think* if they would hire you back (maybe google that to be safe). That doesn't mean that it doesn't happen or that an HR person won't unofficially reach out to a friend or former colleague from your former agency or who may otherwise know you to find out about you or if they would recommend calling you in (it's a pretty small world).
Honesty, overall, I wouldn't be terribly worried about it unless you did something egregious. Advertising is very sink or swim and sometimes people right out of college sink (especially if they don't have any good superiors or mentors to get them started on the right track). I've worked with several fresh-out-of-college creatives who are sinking half the time (or more) and drive me crazy, but I don't hold it against them in the long term because I know they're green and will get better as they learn. Some agencies just aren't good to grow and learn at though because they're so fast-turn and everyone is spread thin.
Have you talked to your boss about it at all? Find out what areas you need to work on and how you can improve? Taking the initiative and having the desire and passion to better yourself and work hard can go a long way.
I think at such an early level, you'll be able to get another job at the same level without too much difficulty and have the chance to make your name there. Start applying elsewhere, if you haven't already. It'd be better to leave on your own, if you can. Hang in there!
Lol did they tell you were getting transitioned? If not you're getting fired bro.
Fired for cause. Laid off if you did nothing wrong.
You get ghosted on an enterprise level:
• you stop getting invited to meetings
• your email, slack, etc stop working
• your work phone becomes a brick
• your badge does not work
• you get escorted out of the building
Are you asking what are the signs or what is the difference between the two terms?
You're not being given much work, or the work you're getting is super easy/mindless, even if you've asked for better stuff. Even more of a clear sign when that happens and the juniors/intents are getting more/better work than you.
A meeting scheduled towards the end of the day with just you and your boss for a "chat" is a dead giveaway. Usually scheduled one day before, not always a Friday.
You'll know. The vibes are unmistakable.
What's the difference? Find a new job.
/ if it's detrimental to my reputation? This is my first job out of school and I know it's not for me
I've been fired/laid off twice, it always led to better things
Will lead to better things. Second the end of day meeting with ambiguous title like "chat" "quick sync" or "catch up". Sometimes no signs leading up to it, but the biggest giveaway I've seen is managers rescheduling weekly check ins multiple times/kind of ignoring you in person.
My boss said to my coworker that he thought lay offs could be happening this week while on vacation.. could just be rumors?
Could it be a transition to a different account?
@pm1 signs, just concerned about the stigma with it? I know it happens all the time.. I don't think I did anything "wrong"
OP I got laid off, and it led to new job and a pay increase. Also honestly try to figure out if your manager is dodging you or is legitimately busy. Finally, I agree with the other posts about not being put on interesting work or not getting new work, but client work ebbs and flows. Depending on the time of the year, there might just might not be a ton to go around.
