How do you send money to a US individual from Canada? Renting an apartment in the US for a long-term project and need to pay for the first month from Canada. Checked both PayPal & Transferwise (contd)

Zelle? I had my tenant zelle me the money but there is a limit of $2k/day.

My experience is that Transferwise is much faster with better rates than PayPal. But I mostly do US-UK, no idea about Canada

Wire money in their bank account ?

like

I had pretty good experiences with purchases over transferwise. But my sample set is low.

like

Three options that I’ve used: a) mail a cheque from a Canadian bank account specifying the currency; b) wire transfer (SWIFT); or c) open a bank account with the US branch of your Canadian bank, then use that account to transfer the funds (probably more time and trouble than it’s worth if you aren’t moving permanently).

Bitcoin. Not joking. Ask them if they have a wallet (you’d be surprised). If so, grab the amount, poo in their public key, and wa-la, two min later they’ll receive the funds...you can send any denomination you so desire and can do so as many times a day, week; year you feel like it :)

like

^yes they’d also need a wallet, but once they do, you’d both have a public address (qr code or hex code). You just head to your wallet, drop in their hex code, decide how much to send, and process the transaction. The time it takes depends on network transactions at the time for the next block but should be within a few minutes to an hour and you are done. There is a small fee applied to the transaction and you are done. On the other end they can just keep the Bitcoin in their wallet or send it onto their exchange wallet and sell it for USD

And both had very poor reviews

VPN and then try PayPal

Or if you use an iPhone try Apple Pay

You can Venmo if you have a US account, phone number and address

Xoom

TransferWise, Revolut, both work well

CIBC has global money transfer, may he that can work? Paypal should be ok, may be ask the landlord to send you an invoice so that you can make the payment against it.

It took less than 5 minutes for me to transfer funds from the US to my brother in India via Transferwise. I’ve used it for a while and love it.

Xoom

I’ve also done BCG1’s option A, it works well and is probably the easiest solution. Longer term, consider getting a US-based bank account, either with a Canadian bank (TD, BMO) or a US bank (Chase, Schwab, ...), it will make things a lot easier and allow you to use Venmo and similar services.

So I’m a dual citizen and have been trying to figure this out for years. I live in the US but have to pay stuff in Canadian. I have US bank accounts and Canadian ones. I have a paypal Canada login that I use my laptop to log in on and a PayPal US account on my phone. I PayPal myself back and forth. Sounds a bit cumbersome, but it’s worked pretty well for me the past few years

Have you looked into OFX? I use them between the US and Eurozone and the rates are good. Takes about a week for the transfer to come through though. Example: Got a 0.8808 rate for a USD to EUR transfer on 4/9. Median exchange rate for that day was about 0.8867. That comes out to an effective fee of $15 on $2,000 or 0.7%. Haven’t found anything better...

Hey all! I’m 30 years old. About to close on a house with a 5.75% fixed 30 yr mortgage. If you were me and your goal was to maximize your net worth by retirement, would you put a few thousand dollars extra into paying down the house faster or invest that extra money in the market? The 5.75% doesn’t feel that low but also not crazy high so I’m torn. Thoughts? 🙏

Name the most ridiculous micro-managing by partners that you experience.

I’ll go first: MP told me that on initial emails, I am always to start with “Hello [name],” but after the initial email, I am not to address her by name again in the same thread. Initial greeting can only be “Hello [name] ” because just first name is too brisk and a “Hi [name]” is too informal. Had a 5 minute, in depth conversation as to why she prefers it this way…

Why would you ever want to rollover your 401K into an IRA? It seems like doing so would essentially prevent you from successfully being able to do a IRA to Backdoor Roth IRA conversion due to the pro-rata rule. Am I missing something? Wouldn’t you always want to just rollover your old 401Ks to your new 401K?
