Hey all. I just got hired as a Sales manager in a remote setting. As soon as I was done with training, the leadership team cut the entire BD side. After spending 4 years as a mid-level ops manager, I tried to break into HR through talent acquisition. Now after 6 years in TA, I've had a hard time getting out of it. My goal was always to get into a more broad HRBP position, but I've since worked for smaller orgs without a solid HR career path. When I ask about my career goals, they keep telling me, "Soon!" Or "Maybe in 6 months!"

If an employer told you a bonus was coming your way, but then their boss determined that you were ineligible and no one told you until after the date of payment already passed and you asked where your money was…would you be upset? I was…especially since I had in writing I met metrics, and the amount that was owed. Their boss decided based on the policy language about tenure I was ineligible.

Are recruiters worth more than L&D specialists? We have a new recuiter that transferred in from another dept. & is already making more than me and has a higher comp range. We have same tenure & they have NO prev. recuiting experience. I should also add I have been helping cover recuiting in interim. I also help cover HR tasks, have my SHRM, 5 years of HR exp., and 2 degrees. Is the "value" for recruiters more than L&D? I feel a little taken advantage of, but want to know if I'm off base here.

My heart is telling me PHR, my mother in law (an HRBP) is telling me to go with SHRM, as it’s more widely recognized, more established and a larger network in general. I have a team member who has a tendency to miss deadlines, is reluctant to take on tasks which they don't like or refuses to participate in company-wide mandates w/o me & the other team members validating the why's. Prior to joining my team, this behavior was alluded to but never told to me directly. Now I'm seeing it. I've discussed missed deadlines which are acknowledged but w/o permanent resolution. I'm an experienced HRBP who's looking for some career advancement advice. I'm currently studying for my SPHR and looking to take the leap to HR Director roles. While I'm a strong HRBP, I've yet to manage a team. And while I train managers on people leadership skills, I myself, haven't had a chance to flex those muscles. A long term solution is to continue to educate on bias, inclusion and stereotyping.
As adults, people need to work on their self awareness around unconscious and affinity bias. This is responsibility of the individual. Why develop with technology/solutions to support peoples ignorance?
In my experience, it has the opposite effect. My last company did it, and it actually made DEI more challenging.
I love the idea but the recruitment/technical piece of it still needs to be fleshed out
Companies should encourage their people to self reflect on affinity/unconscious bias, as well as actively provide data around hiring their inclusive (or lack Therof) practices.
Harvard has pretty good Implicit Association Bias testings. They are relatively quick and simple and can help your staff be more aware of the biases they hold.
I have thought a lot about this. I really do think it is the way to go. I wish plaves would do this more often.
