We actually already started in Louisiana. I have two young kids and a spouse who works different shifts. It's hard, but I make myself make three 30 minute blocks for mental-care. 30 minutes before getting started with the day. This can be a cup of coffee and facebook or whatever. Yes, it makes me wake up a bit earlier, but it energizes me, too. 30 minutes directly after school. This is usually in the car with music, taking the long way home (it doesn't burn as much gas as you'd think). 30 minutes in the evening, usually with my s.o., but with an understanding that no responsibilities are to be brought up during that time.
I also make two-hour blocks for exercize on Tue, Thurs, and Sat since those are generally my lighter days... and, yes, mowing grass is exercise lol
In the end, it's about making a schedule that works for you. Even 10 minutes is better than 0 minutes. Remember, and it's cliche, "If you don't make time for your wellness now, you will have to take time for your illness later."
Wow. I absolutely LOVE this. I have a little one and a fiancé (the father of my little one… it’s just taken us 8.5 years to get to the engaged part). I will definitely try to look at my schedule for when I start back later this week and then after Labor Day with the kids in my classroom and will prioritize me first after reading this. I’m actually going to screenshot this so I can refer back to it as a gentle reminder to myself to take the time. I’m worried about some upcoming appointments I have (eyes, mental health with a new therapist and general check up and wellness with my PCP) and I’m having such a hard time working the courage up to take that PTO at the beginning of the year but I agree wholeheartedly that if I don’t take the time now, I won’t later or I will in the form of some sort of illness/stressor. I am not planning on taking any whole days, just here and there to leave or arrive later for these appointments but I still tend to feel guilty. Hopefully implementing some strategies like this will help me relax and just do what I have to do for my body and mind. Thank you so so much.
Never feel guilty for taking personal days/time. That's what it's for. We're in a sub shortage, so it took a bit before I said "Screw it. It isn't my fault they can't find a sub." If a teacher makes you feel guilty about it, politely, but firmly, tell them to take a long walk off a short pier. You are allowed so many personal days. Use them as YOU see fit, not anyone else.
