Cancun is fucking horrible. You go to another country and all you see are Outback Steakhouse, TGI Fridays, and Senor Frogs. That being said the Maya Riviera is great. Stay in Isla de Mujeres, Playa Del Carmen, or Tulum instead. Hell, even Cozumel is less americanized and trashy than Cancun.
I'm thinking I'll cancel (not sure if I can) and then just book with points. All I wanted to do was add a night using my points to the reservation and i spent 30m on the phone getting shunted from ambassador to platinum concierge to the timeshare ownership Dept to vacation package Dept
I would stay in Tulum over Cancun. If you haven't booked yet.
For the booking: just book extra night as separate reservation and figure out to keep same room once you get there.
My family loves Cancun, because of the same reasons BCG1 hates it. It's easy to get around- there's cheap busses that run every 30 seconds up and down the strip, there's lots of tours, and plenty of places to eat. However, it is not an authentic Mexican experience, if that's what you're looking for.
Lagunamar is not a real Westin- it's a timeshare that you can book with points. The "interface" is not seamless, no one cares about your status, SPG can't really help you.
If you're SPG, you may want to consider cancelling and staying at the JW Marriott. As a platinum, ive gotten suite upgrades pretty routinely at a busier time of year.
Better than Eastin Cancun
I stayed at Lagunamar - it was fine. Rooms are kind of old. Clientele is as expected for Cancun. It's right across a big mall - depends on whether you see that as a plus or a minus but makes it easy to access certain things. Best meal was a taco stand down the road. Boyfriend and I got what we wanted out of it - pool and sun. I have no other point of comparison but if I went back, I'd look to go elsewhere. Probably stay around Playa Del Carmen.
Lagunamar was pretty decent when I was there. Stayed in the timeshare side. GREAT pool and beach. Not as rowdy as you'd think for Cancun IMO...
I thoroughly enjoyed Lagunamar. Lunch and drinks at the pool for lunch and go out to dinner. As mentioned the mall across the street provides a Starbucks, everything else crap. The pool alone is worth it. I stayed in an ocean from 1BR as plat. Free breakfast as a welcome gift for me and my wife.
