How long did everyone have to work at their current job before they were eligible to sign up for their company's healthcare insurance plan? I thought 15 to 30 days was normal, however, I just started a new job and I can't sign up for the company's insurance for three months. That feels like a long time to go without healthcare insurance. Is this normal?

Even when I worked at McDonald’s it was immediate. Personally I’ve never heard of health insurance being 90 days, but have heard of other benefits being that long (such as 401k)

Immediate I didn't even know waiting was a thing that's crazy

At my first job I had to wait two months. I don't think it was a policy. My start date just happened to fall at a bad time and it took some time to do the paperwork and get me into the system. It was particularly unlucky because I got married a few weeks later and ended up in the hospital with a swollen spleen from a bachelor-party-related case of mono. The doctor diagnosed me early but said not to worry about anything, as long as I didn;t do anything strenuous. He did mention that strenuous activity could cause the spleen to swell or even burst. He said that as long as I was in the ER when the spleen burst, I'd be okay. Otherwise, I'd bleed to death within 15 minutes. Funny guy. Don't ask how my spleen got swollen. The doctors wanted to run a bunch of tests. I told them I was currently without insurance, that it wouldn't start until the first of the month, and suddenly all those tests weren't essential after all.

My job it is immediate. Some jobs like you to wait beyond the probationary period

Three months without healthcare that does seem insane. Is that how long your hiring probation period is? My job we can’t sign up for healthcare until we’ve been there for 30 days and get past our initial hiring on review process. So yeah I don’t know if I’d stick around if it takes three months but the job market rough on the other hand so I don’t know.

I’ve seen immediate and everywhere in between. I do think 3 months though is the longest and that was a friend not me. It really does range a ton, I want to say I had to wait a month before benefits kicked in. Three months is a crazy time to be without especially when Cobra from your last is absurdly expensive.

I have aleays heard that it is three months but at my current company you could sign up immediately which I was really surprised by. My last couple companies you had to wait 90 days and get through your probation period before you could sign up for benefits.

3 months sounds like cvs.
Usually immediate eligibility in pharma but if the company is huge with retail workers, there's usually a delay.

Three months is normal because three months is the duration of the probation period. During the probation period, there is no insurance. All the companies I know have this policy.

529 Plan VERSUS Prepaid

We live in Florida and currently have a Freshman in High School and a 16 month old. We hear from our friends and family with college bound children "I wish we would have done Florida PrePaid." After obviously ignoring this for years, we are finally trying to do it before "it's too late" for both children.

Does anyone have recommendations on which plan to go with for each child? I once did the pros and cons on a whiteboard and it seemed like 529 was better.
