As an alternative framing to the popular training methods: don’t sweat it. How many 11 year olds do you know that wear diapers. They will all figure it out eventually. Training just helps the ready-kid get ready a bit faster.
Don’t sweat it and it’ll work itself out. But also do a few things to move things along:
-no liquids a couple hours before bed
-make them go pee/poop every two hours while awake
-let them read or do something fun while on the potty
I know it sounds weird, but take off the training wheels. If he doesn't need to hold it at night, he's getting mixed signals. My grandmother used this method for all 14 of hers and it only took a couple weeks to be fully potty trained. Her kids all swear by it, too.
Sure, put down a mattress cover and prepare to do the wash possibly daily for a few weeks, but that should resolve the issue quickly. Especially if he hates it when he wakes up wet. I realize it's very anecdotal, but my brother was so traumatized he never wet the bed again.
I’ve heard the same for both M1 and MCK1’s points and am in same boat. We are experimenting with bribery, aka M&Ms after successful potty attempts to get her used to going but haven’t gone all in yet. Prob will go for it in a couple of months with the no diapers method and see how bearable it is for us to deal with kid wetting themselves until they figure it out like M1 mentioned. Gonna suck either way but no older kid I know never learned this so be patient
Ours trained early... Because they wanted to. Once they were showing a ton of interest, we just let them run naked around the house for a three day weekend. no diaper, pull up, or underwear. Free bum. And we put them on the potty every hour or so.
It seems like he knows to hold it in, but still doesn’t get that when he’s on the potty that’s his time to go for it.
We still put him in nappys at night and then he seems to let it all out
Actually if you watch kids very closely most of them will have a mannerism or some sign before they poop..my son used to go to corner or lie with his belly down on sofa as if he is tired.. look out for signs like this and once you see a pattern take him to potty when that happens and he will get used to it in a couple of weeks (in most cases)
One thing that worked for my son to give him confidence with all this potty thing is placing one of his stuffed animals on a bowl with some water in it, next to his potty while he’s on it. And then say “Oh look! Your friend did it on the potty? Do you want to try and do the same?”. I mean it worked a bit with mine, or at least helped. Not sure it will work with all kids in the world, but you might want to try this
He will when he’s ready. Don’t take things away to suit your timeline
What BCG1 said. That’s what we did. You need to dedicate a weekend to this. Let them run naked around the house and get them on toilet at times when they usually go and after meals etc... my 2.5 yr old was pretty much potty trained in one weekend.
My daughter never potty trained. My wife woke up one day and told her to she won’t wear diapers anymore and she better not poop on herself. Never had an accident since 2
