How many of you are on track to FIRE in a HCOL area (NYC, SEA, Cali, etc.)? I currently live in Texas, and while no state income tax is great, I don't like living here.

The sweet spot if you have a job where you can work remotely is to live in a state with no state income tax as your primary residence then spend some of the months where the weather isn’t desirable in another place you like that has good weather then. Your tax savings offset the hotel/apartment/travel expenses. Harder if you have kids. I live in Texas as well and spent the summer in Chicago, for example, since I’m a city person but also hate winter.

like

It varies by state so need to be careful but for Illinois for example, you only have to pay if you worked there over 30 days. If you are there for longer, you can either rotate multiple states if you don’t want to pay anything (or just pay for the fraction of the year you’re there).

Live in Seattle and have a couple years to go for FI, probably won’t RE but maybe Coast FI. Got lucky with a cheap place by buying a couple years ago and my mortgage is only 1K

like

Live in Manhattan, currently age 36, on track to fire by 44 or so. Yeah, it is expensive here, but I've been able to double my income compared to what I earned in Texas.

like

SM2 - entirely depends on standard of living you want.
With a paid off mortgage it could be done with around $30k a year or less. Housing might add another $20k.
To be comfortable $100k should be more than enough.
But it’s Manhattan, so you could go as high as you like, adding wants and luxuries.

I came late to the game, but am on track for 54 in NYC metro (having started my professional career at 30).

I could probably do 48, but I want to wait until both my kids finish (or should be getting close to finishing) college before 'retiring' from the high paying professional career.

like

Came late to the game as well and also took a big comp hit in exchange for better QOL, but last I checked still on track to FIRE by at most 50 in NYC. Working to possibly lower that to 45, though whether I will actually FIRE once I am able to is TBD.

like

I'm on track to FIRE by 49 (9 years away) here in DC. That being said, we're considering moving to TN in a few years, where the decrease in pay will be more than made up for by the drastically lower COL.

like

On track by 40 in NYC. Would have hit a lot sooner in LCOL ofc but I’ll take the trade off of being in the city.

like

Will stay in the city for foreseeable future but guess anything can happen

I racked up about $20k in credit card debt due to a confluence of things happening at once (move, school expenses , etc ). I have a fair amount of paper assets but not a much free cash. Assets are down a decent amount with the current market cycle and I’d prefer not to sell them to cover the debt , although they easily could. Any suggestions how to handle the credit card debt without racking up tons of ongoing card interest?

I would like to hit fire between 40-50. Currently 27, 185k total comp (125 for me and 60 for partner). Like my job don’t hate it don’t love it. Does an MBA make sense? I’m guessing it could take me to 170ish with that schools I’m looking at but wondering if the 40-50 retirement range makes an mba not make sense since I’d only have 10-20 years to save vs 12-22.

Would have to finance the whole thing myself. Current net worth is 140k. Thoughts?

Currently, putting in 4% for Roth per pay cycle and maximizing my HSA. I net a monthly income of close to 7k. I intend to save about 3k for the next 3 months in my Marcus Savings Acc and 1.5k from January (reducing it cos my rent doubles) How should I go about planning this and also have some emergency savings?

Will Amex restricting guess access for Centurion Lounge actually make any difference?

I can see short term changes but the way Amex has been aggressively marketing Platinum card, we just will have overcrowding of primary card holders 🤷🏻‍♂️

What's next, everyone has to spend min. 50k a year to get Centurion lounge access or pay per visit.
