I think 3 years is more than enough time. Your ACD probably doesn't want you getting the promotion. Look for the role in another agency or just fight your way up. You don't need your ACDs approval?
It’s not really about the amount of time than it is the contributions. If you’ve helped win pitches, awards, etc then a promotion might happen sooner. It took me a few agency hops and 6 years to go from intern to senior, then another 3 to go to ACD. But not everyone’s journey looks the same!
It’s not number of years. It’s the quality of the work, new business wins attributable to your work and, most-importantly, how your superiors view your work. You often have to work somewhere else to be recognized. A tough thing in todays job market
Pre-Covid it used to be 5/6 years to become a senior. Now that’s enough to qualify you to be an ECD!
Too many people getting promoted too quickly before they can do the work is partly to blame for the drop in quality of our industry.
Don’t rush. Put your time in. Learn your craft. It’ll work out better in the long run.
If you want to know what she meant maybe you should ask her for more detail rather than going to a bunch of randos on fishbowl who have no idea what kind of agency you work at or how they hand out titles, how you’ve been performing in your job, or whether or not 3 years means 3 years total in your career or 3 years at mid on top of who knows how many years as a junior.
