My boss has made it clear that he does not expect or want us working weekends. He is a big proponent of work/life balance. Love that he respects that.
Toxic agency. There might be a case when it’s absolutely needed (maybe a few times a year max) sure but it certainly is not the norm
In my four years with Initiative, I’ve never worked on a weekend and I work on a massive client. I don’t know of anyone in my network that works regularly on weekends either and personally wouldn’t tolerate that. If this is the norm for you, I’m sorry to hear that!
Weekend work had increased in frequency since 2020,at my agency. Early pandemic layoffs were minimal, but less people on accounts are expected to be more productive than ever.
I work every night and every weekend. So does my boss and most of my team. We even have meetings on weekends. I’ve never seen anything like it but I saw the signs during my interview and ignored them.
Eeesh, how do you even have time to interview for a new job?
Not very, thankfully. I'd be looking for a new role if it was expected/required more than a handful of times per year.
It is not normal, however instances of having to work over the weekend still do come up ever so often for me unfortunately. Within my 6 years of experience, one of the following is occurring:
(1) The client development/services team is not level setting client expectations, so the pressure gets put on the shoulders onto the marketing/media services team
(2) Client is obsessive with campaign metrics to the point they are not patient enough for proving out strategies over time before enough data and a proper assessment can be made. (Say goodbye to A/B testing!)
(3) Your client is either online e-commerce or traditional brick and mortar retail who are very dependent on getting good results on major national holidays like (Memorial Day, Labor Day etc.). You can bet your butt you may be on call over the weekend to make sure things all campaigns are running smoothly and expect a text or a call to your personal cell from the client as well over the weekend :/
Come to New York
Not normal at all at my independent agency. There are times through there year we’re some extra time is needed when multiple, different brand project timelines collide, but we’re super strict about work life balance = 40hrs a week
